well make your mind up on budget.
If you work the 22R, extractors, exhaust, intake filter, timing saw great gains with an older hilux of mine.
After that, save your pennies, and then go big.
Come back when you have an idea.

hmmm
1k
hows that
extractors and exhaust,
if your handy with tools and can do the whole job yourself then you maybe able to find a later model 22r with injection and fit that also but to be honest $1k wont go very far at all.

what do you mean by going decently?
i build cars that range from 200-500rwkw so my idea of "decently" might be a little bit different to yours, for instance if a car doesn't make 200rwkw or more i get bored real quick (but i drive a <50rwkw shitter every day)
what sort of power increase do you want?
expect about 10-15KW/$1k on an NA engine unless you grab some NOS and then you can have alot more, but everything comes with a price.
cheers
