Default 3SGTE + new cams, sounds like a truck

    hey guys,

I just put some ST205 cams in my ST185 when I was changing the stem seals

I was super anal with getting everything reset timing wise and have good clearances.

    1. Put crank at "0"
    2. Aligned little pin on cam with mark on rear timing belt cover as best I could
    3. Put cam gears on, aligned the dotted spoke with mark on rear timing belt cover
    4. Inspected dizzy to make sure rotor was pointing at #1

check with a timing light and it's going from "0" to about "15" or so on throttle but she's sounding very very truckish with something like whacking? it's not 'lumpy' but more 'truck' and almost like something's loose or something.

    Clearances specs..

    INTAKE
    1a - 0.008
    1b - 0.007
    2a - 0.006
    2b - 0.007
    3a - 0.007
    3b - 0.007
    4a - 0.006
    4b - 0.006

    EXHAUST

    1a - 0.012
    1b - 0.012
    2a - 0.011
    2b - 0.011
    3a - 0.010
    3b - 0.010
    4a - 0.010
    4b - 0.009

The prescribed clearances for this car are:

    INTAKE
    0.006 to 0.010

    EXHAUST
    0.008 to 0.012

From what I can see that's VERY nice.

So at most the timing would be 1 tooth out, which would make it sound lumpy at worst I think.

BTW this engine has mad compression 180+ on all 4, and just did 140kw on 11psi at dynoday so it's not broken

Was lots of oil on the buckets etc when I took the lid off and assembled it with engine assembly lube too

Any thoughts so much apprecaiated guys thanks,

When checking timing you need to bridge the t and e1 pins in the diagnostic connector.

With those bridged it will give u an accurate timing reading.

Reving the engine wont give u a reading as the timing is advanced by the ecu throughout the rev range. At idle with the pins bridged it should be on 10deg btdc.

By the sound of things you dont have enough timing if its running rough, and chances are, the distributor is out by 1 tooth.

Another way if your good enough is to get it idling and then slowly turn the distributor each way making the idle either better or worse. btw, tap it with a spanner to turn it as it will turn it more incrementally than if you try and do it with your hand.

Just did a similar thig with my 4AGZE (rebuilt the head, installed bigport cams and reshimmed etc).
I had the same problem, sounded like a truck and had no power. CAS (dizzy for a DLI setup) was out a tooth. I set timing like stated above and it's all good.

Impossible for dizzy to be a tooth out has they don't drive off a gear on a 3sgte. They have an offset slot on the cam that the dizzy drive goes into and it can only go in one waw.

yeah hey fellas thanks a lot for the advice

with the 3S, yep, it's impossible to be out a tooth on the dizzy as there's only 1 way the dizzy can go into the cam (love it)

The cam gear might be out a tooth, but I would merely expect that to sound a little lumpy or something.

if your inlet cam is a tooth out it will still run, but make your timing out by 15 deg (or however much 1 tooth is on a gen2). If you drive it and seems to be gutless down low then your prob a tooth out.

Ive found that 3s' sound like a truck in general

4AGE is 10 degrees per cam pulley tooth. Makes the car run like a dog too.

Especially a 4AFC, with one cam pulley, you put both cams out.
