    Default 3SGTE + 11mm Lift Cams (trd) -> help?

    Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone has put 11mm cams into their 3SGTE before (I know the guy who won 4wd at the past dyno day did).

At the moment it pushes down to far and the keepers etc interfere with the seals.

The receiving head is an ST185 one and I'm wondering if the ST205 head was perhaps a little different (taller maybe?)

Love any help you can render as we try and get these into the rally car

    cheers guys

    rob

I'm running 10mm of lift in my Gen3 which fit with no modfication to the head.

The head castings are definately different and I didn't think you'd be able to run that much lift in the vast majority of the 185 heads due to the cam hitting the outside of the head casting on the oil gallery. There were some changes to make more room with the later 185 heads and with the 205 heads. I also wouldn't want to run that much lift on shim overs as they are likely to dig into the edge of the cam, the 11mm cams barely fit onto the shim under buckets.

I'm not too sure if the shim over keepers have a different profile on the bottom allowing more clearance to the seal and guide.

ok josh thanks, the oil gallery issue is ok now but that's super helpful info, looks like we might have to source an ST205 head, rally car is sucking up so much money at the moment lol..

yeah but the issue right now is the retainers etc interfering with the seals.. and I'm wondering what we might be able to do about that.. shim/bucket width issues aside

Well I'd start with pulling out the buckets and springs etc and putting the cam in then measure hom much space there is to play with at full lift between the cam lobe and the guide/seal.

Then you know what you have available and it's a case of measuring up the thickness of the bucket and retainer etc to see where you can make up some height.

I know SAS got custom retainers made up for a 3S they were building recently and the price wasn't too bad, 12 buck each seems to rng a bell, maybe ask Rod about where it was done if you end up needing a custom profile to the retainer to make it work.

or just mill the tips of the guides down that poofteenth of a inch thats required. need to make sure the seal will sit properly tho

either that or just grind the cam a touch. bring peak lift down to whatever fits.

most i could run on the 1uz (and it already had SUB and 33mm buckets) was about 10.5-10.6mm. anything greather required a LARGE amount of machine work

you can run 500 thou on 31mm buckets but need to go shim under .if you are worrying about valve stem seals we knock the guide down another 2 mm which also moves the seal down
not sure on gen 2 head thou but take a measurement under the valve stem seal to see if you can knock it down more
and use gen 3 valve spring retainers

As you can see on greenline there is quite a difference between the gen 2 and gen 3 cams in their listings there.

Have you considered shimless buckets? My built 3sgte got a shimless bucket conversion. Granted this was only with HKS 264 Intake and Exhaust cams which are only 9mm lift. Im not sure what range of shimless bucket sizes you can get but perhaps that might be the easiest solution.

Hope something there helps there or is at least food for thought.

also just a side note i use to run 435thou inlet cam on gen 2 heads which is 11mm of lift no problem and you can go up to 480 thou no problem as well

Slightly off topic but has anyone ever noticed cam lobes wearing into buckets.
It is occuring on the exhaust side only on a gen 3 3sgte. Incidently the inlet and exhaust buckets are same part number so its shouldn't be a heat treatment / hardness issue.
Cams are aftermarket but I'm unsure of specs.

is the cam got wear marks 5mm from the tip of the lobe at all ,not enough duration and a lot of lift,
can wear cam which drops metal onto bucket ,which wears bucket etc
