    Default Cams for 3sgte

    Hey guys,

Is it necessary for me to upgrade valve springs when I install aftermarket cams?

What cams do you guys recommend? I was thinking some 264 mirror setup. I want to try and minimise lag as much as i can tho.

Other than increasing power, are there any other advantages? The motor is out at the moment and im contemplating dropping some in. As the motor is all stock, i dont plan to run big numbers, maybe 220rwkw,i think the standard cams are ok for this.

The main thing i need to know tho, is if I need to change valve springs or do any other head work?

    Cheers!

    what gen engine?
i used std cams in mine and got 240rwkw so you dont actually need cams but if you want more midrange id go with something around 256deg 9.5mm lift.
you may find 264s to be to big for what you want, but it depends if you want to go big later and just buy big cams now.

as for springs, i would put a set in if you want to run decent boost through it as mine started bouncing at 7500 with 19psi. (gen3)

    cheers

edit: just clean the ports up in a gen3 but if its gen2 you may want to get them puttied and ported for better flow as the stockers are fairly average in design.

I had Blitz 264's in my Gen III which were still OK for street.....things didn't get real laggy until the Garrett GT2540 went on and even then it was acceptable. You had to keep the car above 4000rpm if you wanted to be quick though. Great setup for track work so depends on your focus.

Doubt i would bother in a lighter MR2 unless they came up at a great price.

you will see an improvement with properly dialed in cams on a stocker so if you want some more midrange id say grab a set but chose your specs to suit your application otherwise you may go backwards.
