no most head gaskets do not require additional sealant. however a light spray of hylomar is optional on preference. personally i put TGP head gaskets in bare.
I'm going to open up my 3T-C cylinder head to install aftermarket valve springs. i'm wonder do i need to apply some sealant glue or gasket spray into the head gasket prior to the cylinder head installation?

what do you meant by TGP?
on all the head gaskit changes that i have done on my cars and through my work we have used a light spray of hylomer and it is normally recommended when used in a boosted applications. what Toof means by TGP is the normal toyota graphite style head gaskit, not the metal type if that helps
no i mean toyota genuine part, which can be either composite gasket or MLS, ive never seen in any toyota workshop manual forced induction or otherwise any reccomendation to put any adhesive on the gasket.
well thanks for the replies. i'll spray light coat of hylomer and will see how it goes..![]()
i only tend to do it if the block is a bit pitted or marked
i got myself a can of "Copper Spray A Gasket" from Permatax. any one of you use it on your head gasket? is there any pros and cons using it?
If the block is pitted or marked i would be opting for machining of the mating surfaces, especially for a perfomance applicaiton.Originally Posted by SupraM8

no both head and block are in perfect condition no pitted or marked...
i use the hylomar
i can't see it hurting, and if it helps, all the better

18rg and 2tg toyota manuals specify to use sealant on the interchange between timing cover and head and around oil pressure gallery only.
Generally tho, No sealant is required. Most composite head gaskets come with a clear glue coating. This can actually be affected if you use coolant in the engine for its very first heat cycles before the glue "sets".
Copper gasket spray is primarily used with copper head gaskets, which are shit.
FWIW, you may have gotten away with the head left on. Either with a 'toyotool' type, or one of the convential on car valve compressors.
As for the sealant, i use a light spray of hylomar too. Sure, with a pair of freshly machined surfaces there's little chance of leakage. But in the case of a plain R&R - if it helps, more the better.
I have a large sharpening stone which i run over both surfaces. It can help show up any low spots.
Cheers
