External Wastegate

When running a external wastegate do you need to run a BOV as well?

Do you really damage your turbo if you dont?

Under going a turbo conversion at the moment running a t28 (internal welded shut) and runnning a external wastegate on a 4agze.

Im not that cluey on the subject however quite a few externally gated engines i have been heavily involved with do not run a BOV. They have been succesfully doing so for a fair while. They sound like their is a flock of pigeons under the bonnet tho

Choice of wastegate has nothing to do with whether or not you run a BOV.

The merits of running a BOV has been discussed many times on this forum. Suffice to say they're far less important than most people imagine.

Was there a reason why you chose the external over the internal?

Re: BOV (and without this becoming another BOV thread) - really depends on whether the sound of compressor surge annoys you. I guess some setups are different to others - on mine, it was pretty loud and really annoyed me, and I believe I noticed better response between changes once I fitted a BOV...

Like Norbie said, wastegate type has nothing to do with BOV (are external gates really any louder if the waste pipe re-joins the exhaust?)

better boost control for higher boost pressures,

wastegates and bovs are for totally different purposes

wastegate controls boost by venting exhaust gas away from the exhaust wheel
whereas

a blow off valve vents excess boost pressure when the throttle shuts
apparently a bov helps reduce turbo lag during gear changes
quite a few stock cars run them such as saabs, most turbo nissans, most turbo toyotas. i reckon a non wanky plumback one certainly wont hurt
