Hi,
I want to know if I have to source bolts from Toyota or if they are readily accesible through any quality bolt joint.
I'm after the 8 or so bolts connecting/holding the bellhousing to the engine (not bellhousing to gearbox). I have the bolts holding the starter motor and slave cyclinder.
Is it just a matter of taking the right size bolt to Mr.Metric and asking for the same, or do I need to order through Toyota? It is for a 1G-GTE.
Simple question, but the answer will save me a lot of time.

any decent bolt store will have a compatable bolt however they wont have the same flanged head which is no big deal. Just ask for a grade 8.8 bolt the same as the sample you give them.
Standrad style flanged head ones are MUCH easier to work with. The bolt shop ones will have huge heads on them; and whereas you once used a (say) 14mm socket to work on a bellhousing, you now will be using a 19mm which sounds ok, but if they are in tight or hard to get at positions (close to the trans tunnel etc) then that can be a pain getting a biger socket in there. Thats the only diff really, other then perhaps the lengths of the non oem bolts (you may have to shorten some?).
I needed bolts for an engine stand, any place with that rack of bolts and threads for you to use with your example bolt is what you need, even supercheap has these.
I took in my bolt, screed it into a thread on the stand to find the right one and grabbed my bolts.
Was about $4 for a pack of 3 with some nuts.

Sure you can get bolts from the bolt shop.
But I will be very impressed if you can find ones with the same head size, captive spring washers / washers, and plated (to resist corrosion).
OEM bolts really are very nice in the scheme of things

And as you pointed out earlier, the wreckers have them at the right price. I always buy a couple along with whatever else I'm purchasing.Originally Posted by wilbo666
