There was an english V4-in one of their wierd looking vans-but the main thing that kills them is balance. It's impossible to dynamically balance a V4. In addition, an I4 is prettymuch small enough already.
And yep-pulse timing is all the sound has to with. As for the torque-yep too. V configuration is purely a packaging item.

They kinda have. Subaru makes boxer engines, which are kinda like V config engines. They do this so they can have the engines center of gravity down lower in the engine bay.Originally Posted by Merudo
The reason V4s, or boxer 4s are not done much is 'cuz with an inline 4 you only have to make 2 cams for a DOHC. Only have 2 cam gears etc. It's just easier to make 1 bank rather than 2. Also, an inline 4 is already very small, why would you wanna make it smaller?

Actually straight 8's were reasonably common in the pre-WWII days, quite a few manufacturers made them. There was even bigger stuff around like inline 12's, but I don't think they were used in cars. You're right though, any inline engine bigger than a six and you'll have problems with crank harmonics.Originally Posted by jonchai

Um, the exhaust note has almost nothing to do with the number of cams. Have you ever heard a 1UZ with a decent dual exhaust system? I can assure you it "rumbles" just as good as any old-school bogan V8.Originally Posted by jonchai

agreed on the 1uz, its all in the exhaust. I'd hav eto say my cousins old EB used to rumble but once again that was merely the result of a good exhaust system.
If in doubt power out
did it have cams? cams will make any car lumpy! V's or not!

They probably have, but no I haven't heard of any. It'd be really hard, as the Subaru boxer engiens are longitudional, not transverse. Finding a gearbox to mate up to it might be a big issue too. You'd be much better off fitting it to a RWD, as then you could just take out the front LSD and driveshafts, and it's a rear wheeler.Originally Posted by Merudo
Although, to be honest the WRX engine isn't so fantastic that you'd wanna take it and swap it into something else. It's good in the WRX, but IMHO the EVO engine is better, if you want an AWD engine. You have other 4 banger / compact turbo options too. 13b turbo RX7 engine, 3S-GTE, SR20DET.
I would be tempted to get a WRX (in fact, I'm being tempted right now), but it would only be due to budget, as I couldn't afford a Lancer Evolution.

Don't get a WRX if you want an evo.. it just won't work.
I didn't mean strictly FWD corollas, but yeah...
I just thought it would be humourous to see a sprinter go past you with that WRX-ish rumble they are so famous for... lol
What I want is a more powerfull car that drives the rear wheels, but is still light enough to chuck about a bit. The problem is, I'm used to FWD, and I'm worried if I go turbo RWD, I'm gonna end up in a tree. Turbo AWD seems to be the best option. As such, I have the EVO, WRX, GTR, or GT-Four as options. The GT-Four would have to be the Group A model, otherwise it'd just too heavy. But the engine in the ST185 isn't powerfull enough, compared to the other contenders. I hate the look of the ST205 too. EVO is too expensive, and the GTR is a bit heavy. So that leaves me with the WRX.Originally Posted by SL666

Besides, i'm only tempted at this point. I probably wont get one.

buy a caldina

Actually in a 90 degree V configuration engine all of the primary vibrations are cancelled out leaving only secondary vibration. This is why you can balance a 50c coin on the inlet manifold of a 1UZ and rev it to just under the redline without the coin falling over...
