    Angry 1GGTE wont start

hey guys, i've just put another 1GGTE into a GZ20 soarer, but the bastard wont start. well...it kinda starts, but dies after about 3 seconds of idling.

i can rev it up once, but then it dies straight away.

the car originally had a 1GGTE in it with twin GTR T28's, and i've gotten another long motor, and put all this stuff on it, due to a big-end issue :S

when i put a line-locker on the return line, i get 2 revs with the throttle out of it before it dies, or it'll idle for about 5-6secs.

it's as if the fuel pump is switching off after a couple seconds of running...

    any ideas?

Injector 12v! Check it out Steve. I think it would be simular to the AE86. Usually the ecu will power it for start up then ignition will take over. Even though the ignition will be on at ON and START.

Had this problem with a friend's 4AGE and we gave IGN power to the Injector 12v and all was good.

Only thing I can think of though, was it fine before with the old engine before everything was swapped ? Also if its like a Gen 1, it might have one of those old diagnostic pods hanging from the loom just before it goes into the cabin. Check for those and see if there is any fuses, there might be an injector fuse.

Not to sure if this will all work for the 1G but, sounds like injector power.

hrms, ok...i could give that a go i spose.

the original engine was gen1, but the new one is gen2. i did, however put all the sensors, injectors, loom, and ecu on the new engine...except the 2 coolant sensors at the thermostat housing, as the old ones were fuggered, so i used the ones off the gen2 engine, and changed the plugs to the new ones.

Sure it was a gen 1? dont think they came out with gen1's might of been gen 2 and the new engine is a gen3.

guessing this is the one that just got sold not long ago. The dude is on here.

Did you change the loom and ecu?

i was of the understanding that gen1 and gen2 both had yellow injectors? i used the same loom and ecu from the blown engine, so it all plugged in, which is why i'm kinda not understanding what's going on.

maybe i'm just tired from having worked on the car for 3 days straight, and having a fair stack of dramas come with it

Try looking for leaks in the piping Iintercooler etc) after the AFM. Even a small air leak can stop the AFM from operating and with no airflow, and the starter is not cranking, after a short period the ECU switches off the fuel pump as a safety function.

Does it keep running if you keep cranking (i.e. hold on Start). If so, check that the main body --> engine loom pins are correct. I had similar symptoms when the IGN and START pins were back to front.

Otherwise, check the Circuit Opening Relay, which is supposed to be triggered by the ecu. With the key on ON, is the fuel pump making noises? (should be able to hear it). If not, you can ground a particular wire off the Circuit Opening Relay socket to force it to stay on and see if that's your problem.

My money is on the fuel pump not staying powered once the STA signal stops. Had this happen to me - I think it's the green wire coming from the AFM that will trigger the ECU to run the fuel pump.

    it's all just really strange.

the car is using the same loom and ecu as it was before, as well as tps, and afm. the fuel pump hasn't been changed, the circuit opening relay hasn't been changed...

    Maybe the injectors are different?

    just a guess.

Its gotta be something to do with fuel though.

Check the continuity of the wires then. It's possible there is a break in one, or a pin has worked it's way loose.

Check the AFM is getting voltage too, since that'll trigger the ECU to switch on the fuel pump. Check the fuel pump is on after cranking and firing, it really does sound like no fuel to me.

    Hey mate,

Might be a long shot - but worth a look....
Is it possible to have hooked up your fuel return and feed lines the wrong way round?

This gives simmilar issues to what you are seeing.

nah, the feed line has a banjo and the return is just clamped.

i sorted it, thanks, bypassed ignition power at the circuit opening relay to the fuel pump.

    cheers all for your help/suggestions!
