rear auto transmission seal removal help

hi everyone.

i'm having some trouble replacing the seal where my tail shaft meets my auto transmission

the car is a 1986 hiace with a 3y engine (i can't seem to find what type of auto trans it is)

i'm trying to replace the seal as i've seen transmission fluid coming out from there. but i'm at a loss as to how to actually get the seal out. the green dots in the picture is what i presume the seal is. its made of metal and if i try and pry it out it just bends (only very slightly as i didnt want to stuff it)

the gregories manual calls it the extension house oil seal, but doesn't list any way of pulling it apart or replacing it.

so where do i go from here?

The big metal cover there comes off quite easy with a few taps from the soft faced hammer. Tap in the direction of the diff of course

With the metal dust shield out of the way the rest should be pretty straight forward, leaver out with screw driver, install new seal (lube)

yeah take off the housing first.

then you can

use a seal puller tool, its a handle with 2 different hooks on the end, work your way around slowly pulling a bit every time.

or make a puller tool, ie a long shaft with a hook on the end
and a slide (weight on the shaft ) to impact it out. work your way around the seal slowly pulling a bit every time.

or pry it out with a screwdriver, can get messy sometimes.

then reinstall new seal with some oil and a socket the same OD
(outside diameter) and drive it in straight and slowly.

i tried getting that dust cover off, but it refused to budge

i managed to replace the seal but, there was actually a metal cover over the seal, with a thick bit of felt behind it. (felt was soaked in fluid) but yeah i just pried it out with a screw driver and replaced it.

and the leak seems to have stopped so i guess its all good for now.


now i have to go track down the oil leak... (this engine has done about 450,000k's)

bit of a thread revival

so i've replaced the seal (twice, one non toyota one genuine one) yet i'm still getting a leak from out of that seal

what could be causing it? any suggestions? i'm 99% sure that's where the leak is coming from. mainly due the fact that it gets flung round by the drive shaft and the gear box above that doesn't look wet from the fluid

Whats the surface on the tailshaft look like?

what gbox is it for? toyota gave me 3 different seals for my w58 until one sealed properly. and yea if the surface on the tailshaft is pitted, rusted etc it will stuff the seal. the dust cover should come off with a bit of persuasion from a rubber mallet. thats how i got mine off.

i forgot to have a real good look at the tail shaft but as far as i can tell it's not rusted (might have other issues though)

like i mentioned its from a hiace with a 3y auto transmission. i don't actually know what kind of transmission is in it.

i used this part number: the first oil seal kit




gave that part to the people at toyota, he said that part number succeeds to or superseeds to (wasn't listening properly) to this number 04332 - 30030

and it did come in a kit like the others



where abouts will i find out what kind of gear box it has? will it be stamped onto it some where? or build plate of some sort. i did managed to get the dust cover off made the job alot easier.

If the gearbox is in the original car, just take the VIN or chassis number to Toyota and they should be able to look it up for you.

hi everyone

so my beloved van has thrown another seal. could smell the transmission fluid burning on the way home. got home and its dripping really bad from the same spot after running decently for a while

so probably means the tail shaft has rust or pitting on it. i'll have a good look when i pull it out this arvo or tomorrow. but what are my options with it?

can i get some really fine sand paper 1200 - 2000grit and give it a light sand. or will i be better off getting a 2nd hand drive shaft from somewhere? i think i also heard something called a speedy sleeve or rapid sleeve?

also does anyone know if the shafts are different size between the auto and manual, toyodiy gives 2 different part numbers

Unlikely you'll be able to repair the shaft. Better off just getting a replacement yoke (either new or 2nd hand). Speedy sleeve may be able to do the trick, but I don't know if they make them for yoke's and they'd have to be about 70mm long.

As far as the seals go, All W40, W50, G5x, W5x, A4xxx tranny's use the same sized shaft.
The R15x and A34xx uses a larger shaft.

yeah i just pulled it out and yes there is some small rust right at the base of the yolk which is probable causeing all my seals to stuff up yay for learning the hard way

but there's also this nasty gauge which definitely wasn't there last time i pulled it out. its about .5mm at the deepest part. must have been rubbing on something on the inside of the box. so i guess tracking down a 2nd shaft might be my next step

I don't think there is any chance that only the yoke needs replacing.
That's the strangest wear I've ever seen, just on half of the yoke like the output shaft is bent, plus high heat turning it blue where the seal runs. The felt wiper may get that hot if it hasn't been lubed. Yeah, rust will quickly wear out a seal, but yours would leak from the yoke being worn so much & wobbling around, worn seal or not.

In the 2008 pics with the green dots the shaft looks like it's centered pretty well, does it still look like it is in the center of the seal or off to one side?

There is a lot of metal missing from there that has been churning around & not doing the trans a bit of good.

yeah the actual out put shaft on the gear box is wobbly and has some play in it i was never sure if this is how its ment to be as i've never delt with one before.

but yeah i'm pretty sure its the original gearbox and has 457,000k's on it so could be new gear box time and i'd rather not spend money on a van i paid $400 for

Gearbox output shaft bearing is stuffed I suspect!
