Sounds like the auto is on its last legs. The good news is you can pick up 5M auto's for next to nothing these days.
Hi all,
My little brother has a MX62-R Cressida with a 5M-E and auto.
I dont really know much bout auto's so im wondering if ppl could give me some suggestions bout the cause of the following symptom;
The gearbox seems to "slip". After braking or putting the car in drive, when power is next applied the engine (sometimes) revs up like its in neutral before dropping down, and can even stay at the higher revs for short periods of driving.![]()
Fluid is clean and full.

is that acceptable grammar to use those two concepts in the once sentence?Originally Posted by Norbie
seriously: it could also be lack of trans fluid - but Norbie is probably on the money.
Low fluid was my first thought as well, except for this part:

Norbie, whats next to nothing in your opinion, manual too if you've got an idea? Before i go price bashing.
Thanx

norbie: sorry about that - my eyes thought that was part of *mic's sig.
mic: cheap as in throw-away. Wilbo threw two out a while ago. You should be paid to take them off people's hands. They might be in a similar condition to your brother's existing auto-box - but if it's free, who's to argue about quality?
Are you checking the fluid when the car is running and hot?
That is when the fluid should be checked, hot, running and in N / P.
Cheers
Wilbo
I haven done the checks but probly not wilbo. How does the gear selection affect the level?
I would have thought when hot the oil would be greater in volume. If you have it full when its cold, and it expands, can that cause the problems he's having, or issues in general?

might get about $10 per box.
just make sure you dont have more than $50 worth of steel or gov't rams you up the rectum with tax and crap![]()
hello
When the engine is running the oil is pumped into the torque convertor and the rest of the auto. The level can show correct when not running and then become really low when you start the engine.Originally Posted by mic*
There is a hot and cold mark on the the dipstick, but regardless the engine should be running (and I would take the cold on the dipstick with a grain of salt.).

Sounds the same problem i'm havin with my MX62 Cressida also. This problem is usually associated with what Wilbo is saying plus the worst case which I say it is,the forward clutches are stuffed or on the way out.Whats it doin in reverse?if its doin the same then the reverse clutches are goin. One of the easiest ways out is convert to manual like i'm about to do.If you go manual then get in touch Wilbo as he has done this conversion already. Also if your keen take the tranny pan off and see wats lurking in the bottom of it.If theres metal filings in there then it would definitely be clutches.
Cheers Brett.

Yeah I threw away a 5M auto last year too. I actually tried to give it away for about a year but no-one would take the bastard away, so it went to the tip.
As above, a second-hand auto is likely to be on its last legs as well. They're all at least 20 years old so the chances of finding a good one are increasingly slim. Manual conversion is the go!
A W5x 5-speed is typically in the $3-400 range these days; add a few hundred for the other assorted bits and you should be good to go. A manual conversion will totally transform the car, mucho recommended! Ask Wilbo nicely and he'll give you the low-down on MX62 manual conversions.

What bolt up manual boxes suit? And approx value thereof for hustling purposes...
Thanx heaps ppl.
(EDIT: SLOW TYPER... Thanx Norbie)
So W58 suits? I need one of them for my 1G... But rumor has it that there never was a manual Cressida from the factory? The footwell space supports this. My point being; manual is a bit squishy and pain in the butt to get in? Wilbo, where did you go?
If the box is rooted, then i will force him to buy a manual...![]()

get either a M--> W50/40 bellhousing from a corona markII/old crown or a M series --> W55/58 from a MA61/MA70.
hello
As norbie said, without a doubt the best thing I ever did was make the MX62 manual (and it still has the 5me!).Originally Posted by mic*
I would personnaly go for the W5X alloy (W55, W57, W58), so get a MA61/MA70 W58 bellhousing, flywheel, clutch fork, slave, master etc. (some other bits come from other cars). The clutch pedal was a bit of a pain.
The gearbox fits without a drama, as far as I know there were manual GX61's released and also about 300 manual MX62's in the USA. You need to modify the gearbox x memeber (I couldn't find one to fit from another car...), get a longer tailshaft (80mm).
And you are done. It isn't hard
If you need more details feel free to ask.
Cheers
Wilbo
