and its not good to undo things with a torque wrench, they are only for doing up, get yourself a big long breaker bar!
and manuals are unbelievably handy when pulling down or building engines, they explain everything to the last detail, with a manual, somebody with no mechanical experience could build a engine.

ok it is nothing like an 18rg but....there will be some main bolts in the head. being a six cylinder, i will assume 14 of the blighters (one for each corner of a cylinder).
you will have the chain held onto the gear at the front of the cam, and you will have one or 2 bolts probaby around the timing chain cover at the front of the engine that goes into the head.
after all this is off (for simplicity sake i will assume you have taken exhaust and intake off to make accessibility for yourself easier) you should then find that you can virtually run your hand around the head and you won't hit any wires or pipes that may still be holding the head down.
Check this thoughrouly as there is nothing worse than trying to pull the head off with one wire or pipe still attached to the car. i can't stress this enough.

If you are 100 percent sure you have got it it will be time to pull the head off.
the head may be stuck down fairly tightly after years of togetherness so you may want to give it a helping hand.
On my 18rg there is a spot in between the head and block that has a little recess area, it is near the front near the timing chain cover (again make sure you have checked all bolts to the head have been removed from anthing that might be connecting to it such as the timing chain cover). you should be able to place something between the 2 surfaces at this point and pry the head apart. once you have one side, the otherside just comes.
don't use a screwdriver to pry the head apart from the block a any other point other than this reccess area. thhis area isn't affected by the headgasket and doesn't need to be sealed against anything so you should be fairly safe.
then bob should be your uncle.
it may also help if you are able to get a mallet (read 'not hammer') in there to give it a deft persuasion in the up direction from the sides of the head.
    hope it helps
don't give up you will never look back after you have accomplished changing the head gasket.
