Yes, the springs could be a bit harder, but I'm more a fan of softer suspension/stiff swaybar route. It works better with the weird places I drive, like dirt roads, through parks & reserves, ... And you remember what Aussie roads are like, OC?
I don't think spring rates should be soft enough so that you can drive over speed humps without needing to slow down, so I may tackle that along with a spot of lowering. Just cos its 4wd, doesn't mean it needs the ground clearance of one.

Wheels & tyres will come after I figure what/if I'm going to do anything with the brakes. Tho tyres may come sooner with a trade in cos they're so noisy. Ended up having to shut the windows to have a conversation with my passenger on sunday on wet asphalt roads

so you want a soft roader to go on parks and reserves (would you disconnect swaybars then? to get more wheel contact?), but also want it to go around a racetrack

err.. you should slow down for speedhumps...

just piss off the dangerous tyres, before you crash it again , get 17's or 18's with big spoke clearance and they will fit whatever brakes you think up later, and drive the car...

and order the TEIN shocks and springs. they are cheap and are made for your car.. off the shelf... (Type wagon or whatever.. they have a site in english)

I can get a custom one built for around $300. Doubt with postage, etc, I could get one shipped over? But I'll look into it.

On every car I've owned, I've managed to get the compromise right. Generally get stiffer than standard springs to reduce the forward/backward pitching, but not Mos stiff spec, hence the reason I get large swaybars. How's tailout power oversteer on a FWD stiffness grab you

I do slow down for speed humps, but with the current suspension I could prob get away with not doing so.

Will look into the Tein rates. Never had a car they'd bolt onto before, but generally, JDM rates are too stiff for my purposes.
I can cock a rear wheel (Justen will remember what this looked like on my last one), so this would be made worst with a stiffer rear bar, so most likely I'll end up getting both ends done.

I was a fan of softer springs and stiffer anti-roll bars but when the springs are too soft the car dives and lifts too much under hard braking/accel. Finding that sweet spot is pretty tricky though.

Yeah, currently pitching a bit back & forward a bit, so I agree with the stiffer than standard spring rates.
Tein "S tech" springs are 3.9kg/mm 43mm lower front, 3.5kg/mm 32mm lower rear, which seems very stiff compared with stock, but I'm not that clued up on spring rates, so I'll defer to those with better knowledge.

I wonder about their strut rates? Even the Koni yellows I had on the last one I wound in 1/2way right at the start, so they're generally not stiff enough out of the box.

Maybe a little, but i think it is a decent compromise between street and track.

Besides, stiffer springs by themselves don't actually improve grip all that much

spring rates are only part of the story, comparing the spring rates of a macpherson strut to a-arm suspension is a folly.

All about Leverage, a macpherson strut will give a wheel rate very close to the spring rate, A-arms, depends on their geometry and where the spring is placed

Steve those front rates for the Teins are ~220 pounds per inch. I run 250 pound front springs in my AW11. I suspect there may be a bit more weight in the front of the wagon

Hard to believe that kind of rate could be an upgrade for a car of that weight.

stock i believe are abotu 2.3-2.5kg/mm
they are basically a mac strut, so wheel rate should be similar to spring rate..

TEIN "basic wagon" have 4.0kg/mm in front and 3.0kg in the rear (with 50mm lower front and 40mm lower rear)
they are only 107625yen for the set of shocks, springs and adjustable height.....

TEIN Stech "Soft" are 3.9kg and 3.5kg front/rear.... only 32550yen/set
TEIN Stech "Medium" are 5.5kg and 5.1kg front/rear.... only 32340yen/set

edit: sorry to have turned this into a "fix steves car" thread.. but.. hopefully some good will come of it
add 17x7.5+42 or 17x8+32/35 or something similar. bridgestone RE011 or RE55 or whatever turns you on = good handling car.. no need for krazy kustom swaybar

edit: shit dude, these nice lookin second hand TEINS are 60,000yen.. even with shipping to aus and crap exchange they are probably under AUD$1000
