    Default Cusco LSD

    Hello fellow members,

Im looking on the internet and have come across the cusco lsd.

I have come across 2 different types, The MZ and The RS.

Im not sure on the difference and havent found much info on the subject.

Next thing is the difference between a kaaz and the cusco???

The diff is a T series zenki.

    Thanks Phil

RS is one way. MZ is two way lsd

kaaz vs cusco - much of a muchness. kaaz have variable ramps to set the lsd engagement rate. not sure how or who can disasseble and install the different plates though

    Wrong.

BOTH are either 1, 1.5 or 2-way. Actually, you can dissassemble them and change it's setting from 1 to1.5 to 2 or from 2 to 1.5...

MZ & RS are slightly different designs.

The RS is always engaged slightly due to springs and provides a smooth transition from partially locked to fully locked and is much more predictible and controllable due to this fact. (better for grip?)

The MZ is torque engagement only and is noisier/less predictible. As it doesn't engage until your on or off the throttle to engage the plates. And it has 2 more clutch plates than the RS... (better for high power/sticky tires?)

I had an RS 2-way in my 86. Great diff, very smooth engagement and very quiet.
I have a tomei in my car now which is a rebadged KAAZ and the engagement is very harsh and its chattery and clunky.

Depends. I don't mind the noise but if you want a good LSD without the noise, go the RS.

    Very helpful.

At this stage im lookin at a MZ off of The Wonderful trusted website.

with that attached to some 4.778 gears being driven by a 20 valve should be a good thing i hope..

    thanks again

RS, is recommended for street, lower initial torque, not as aggressive and a bit smoother

MZ, recommended for track use, has harder initial torque, much more aggressive, will carry on and jerk, make noises etc

Haha. No worries. Figured you just didn't check.

I have/used an RS in my ae86 (its actually in the shed since I swapped to a ma4x diff) and it was very smooth, quiet w/good engagement and very nice lockup. The best fluid for lockup while keeping the diff quiet (& being quality) I've ever used is Motul 90pa. RS+90pa = win.
