    Default Diff noises

I have a t18 diff in my ke70, but the drums have been converted to a disc setup from an r31 skyline... Since installing the setup I have a noise coming from something in this setup not sure where to start looking... I dont really know the condition of any of the parts except as far as I know everything was ok when I bought it.

The noise I experience isnt a whine so I dont think bearings are the problem but more of an unbalanced vibration or rub... The noise and vibration is always there no matter the speed - obviously gets more annoying when going faster!

Plenty of people have told me different things it could be like uni joints, diff center, bent axles, and also just the brakes causing the problem

I seem to think its the brakes cos the handbrake doesnt work particularly well and the old skyline handbrake sytem has always been unreliable (one way screw type). Also one side seems to drag a little more than the other... Dont really know though because applying the handbrake when moving doesnt stop the noise...

Anybody got any better ideas before i start replacing stuff that probably doesnt need to be?

    Thanks anyhow...
    wow i wrote an essay!

start simple. jack it up one side at a time and spin, see what happens.

pull out driveshaft and check the uni joints by hand

pull out axles and check bearings by hand.

pull out diff centre and check pinion and crown bearings by hand.

make sure wheels are balanced (try front wheels on rear)..

check brakes and then double check...

anyway, be methodical and try to rule out each item as a cause.

it could be something as simple as the discs not being centred correctly on the axles.

wow cant believe i got a reply - make that two! so fast!

oldcorollas i like your thinking ill get onto it!

things im pretty sure its not are:

wheel balancing - gotten that done while noises were there
diff center -if memory serves me correct it seemed fine when i installed it

but ill try all the other things first then see if it cant be fixed!

    thanks again!

Man i had a wineding sound comein from my diff and it was only there when i was going forward and that was the crown and pinion.
And wen i looked at the crown it was stuffed. (So was the pinion)
So i got a new center and pinion and now its all good man.
But a vibration or a rubbing sound i dont know.
may-b just get the diff reconditioned and be sure to put diff oil in there not gear oil.
Apparently gear oil is to gum up the diff somehow.
But if you dont wont to spend BIG money may-b just buy a 2nd hand non stuffed diff and play around with your old diff go from there!
Anyway thats what i'd do bro. Hope it works out man cya!

so you have a done a disc rear end have you changed the axle bearings at all ,or are they still the same single roller bearings cause you might be getting disc flex as single roller bearings are ok for drums ,but discs on the rear you would need duel race roller bearings
the noise will be there mainly going around corners or the calipers might be rubbing on something as well

nah i think the bearings are just the stockies... can i get dual race roller bearings to fit? which ones? noise is always there more of a binding sort of noise... so no matter how hard you turn in either direction... ill go throught the whole checklist of oldcorollas on the weekend tho.
