Question Is this turbo stuffed? (Pictures within)

Hi, i recently purchased a second hand TD05H (evo 4 variant), and upon removing the exhaust manifold found it to be caked with oily grit.

Im not 100% sure what this means - Is this the sort of thing you would associate with blown seals? Mainly concerned about reliability here, as it's supposed to be going on our 4a-gte

    Advice and comments appreciated

    Thanks

id say IMHO the old original motor had an oil consumption issue annd was using it real bad.
or the oil seal in the turbo was farked and was leaking oil into exhaust housing chamber.
first theory i think from knowledge may be the answer. some here ill confirm my answers.

maybe rings really gone or worn. or pressurised engine causing it to push past rings (oil that is.)

better spending a little coin and going for a basic reco on it anyways ....better to be a little pedantic when it comes to turbos than be a little ignorant and hoping for the best.
will always save u cash on something unknown!

    hope this helps!

    cheers

i think it could be the oil seal in the turbs becuase i would of thought that it would have been a bit cleaner if it where burnt oil instead of unburnt from a leaky seal.
If it was the engine passing the oil it would have been using heaps (HEAPS) of oil.

Thanks guys, the dude i bought it off told me the oil's due to a faulty afm on his car causing it to run rich, but i'm sceptical.

I've been offered a replacement from an rs model, but it has nicks on the fins.
Any thoughts on which one i should go with? The rs one is clean all the way through.

If this is likely to cause me grief, i'll go for the rebuild. Trying to avoid that though, things are getting pretty expensive for me now

fuel isnt going to make it use oil unless its using so much fuel its washing down the bores and filling the sump up (if the oil smells like fuel...well... theres fuel in the oil) and thinning the oil out.

its like choosing between hiv and hep C, just get a low k turbo off a skyline or something or find a low k evo turbo with no probs.
