The splined tool cuts down on the swearing and cursing as you find out under the car that the shaft doesnt quite line up.

thanks for the info everyone ive found this brief guide to installing the clutch i have,

    http://www.zeroyon.com/index/content/view/59/47/

but being fairly brief im still a little unsure as how to go about the alignment part after its assembled and the plates are offset do you just insert the tool through the first section then turn until it slides all the way through??

Doesnt matter, so long as the splines line up.

The thing is....... once everything is bolted you WONT beable to turn the clutch plates to align the splines

This will all need to be done before it is bolted up tight + making sure the plates are centered.

Best bet is to find a imput shaft off a w 57/58 and use that.

...Or a spilned tool thats already been bought.

Any aid, is simply an aid to your logic - you know whats goto go where or you wouldn be apptempting it. Dont rush the important bits. Put a smear of grease on the tip of the input shaft so that locating the spigot bearing is easy as it can be.

There is no direction, clock or counter clockwise. Every pilot/spigot bearing has some play, so I like to move the shaft up&down left&right to make sure it's centered when things haven't been tightened, and are loose enough to shift around but hold that position until being tightened down.
