    Default w58 with 1JZ

    Hey everyone,
I'm researching my upgrade from 1G to 1JZ in my cresta, and I've seen mention of a few people running the 2JZ-w58 bellhousing on their 1JZ's, and thought that, as I want a manual 1JZ, I have a w58 already, and the R154's are a. expensive, and b. a little bit rare, if I could go with a w58, I might be better off, for the time being.

What are the negatievs of going with a w58? Is it likely to get completely chewed up? Will I just need the 2JZ-w58 bellhousing, and everything else will just bolt up?
Does going with the w58 just mean that pushing forward for much power is not such a great idea until I get a better gearbox behind me?

Also, if there's anyone in the Melbourne Eastern Suburbs area with an x chassis with a 1G or a 1JZ, would it be possible to come for a ride with you, just to see what kind've increase I'm goign to get out of a 1JZ? If I believe I would be happy investing the money that'd otherwise be put into a 1JZ, I might just work the 1G a little bit...

Lots of people are running W58's behind 1JZ's and most of them seem to survive pretty well, but of course it largely depends on driving style and what clutch you're using. A grabby racing-style clutch will kill a W58 fairly quickly, but if you stick with an organic full-face clutch you should be OK.

You will need a 2JZ-GE flywheel and clutch in addition to the bellhousing.

Are the 2JZ flywheel and clutches relatively simple to find, being as they are behind NA Supra's, GS300's or whatever the Lexus Aristo is and such cars?

I've had no gearbox issues with a steel plate W55 and an alloy plate W58 behind my 1JZ.

I've got a twin plate clutch.

This is in a slightly lighter MA61 tho...

And for the record I've broken a diff, but not a gearbox...

    Cheers
    Wilbo

I've got a W57 living quite nicely behing the 1JZ. It is in a RA60 though, so significantly lighter than a Cressi.

Whether it will last is ultimately up to how you drive. If you are already thinking of more power out of the 1JZ and you are "aggressive", then I'd go for a R154.

The software required Win95 or better, so I installed Linux.

At this stage, just trying to get the 1G out, as I think the engine is on it's way out, and I don't want to spend any money repairing it if I'm going to do a 1J conversion. So will not be pushed too hard at this stage, probably more of a weekend cruiser.

When I did my conversion, we have used a 2JZ flywheel with JZ->W58 bellhousing, the only problem was working out which clutch fork and bearing/carrier to use. Ended up using some all-in-one bearing + carrier that cost about $30. If you're unsure, you'll need to measure and experiment until you find the right one to release the clutch correctly.

It's not a hard conversion to do anymore - it's had so much research poured into it from the MA61 peeps on this forum!
