Just a long 3/8" vac hose to somewhere easily accessible in the engine bay and then plug it with a bolt, but only put 3-4mm of the bolt in, as the vac will hold it there, but under backfire it will pop it off.

I think he means what does he connect the other end to

For the life of me I can't remember what an injected 304's vacuum hoses look like, so can't think of a place to get it from.

Does it matter whereabouts along the intake tract it is? I'd assume the closer to the manifold the better, but what are the general rules/guidelines of placement?

Into the manifold works pretty well as thats where the biggest expansion will be (and hence the most force on the hoses). All else failing just drill and tap a hole for a 3/8 or 1/2" brass fitting.

While i'm at it, i have no idea what to do with my old fuel tank which still has 1/4-1/2 a tank of fuel in it. Sure i can siphon it into someone elses car, but then i have an empty fuel tank on my hands, which i gather is one of the more dangerous things to have hanging around

tip the fuel out into your mate jerry (mr. can) and use for cleaning parts and molotov cocktails
fill the tank up with water and cut it into pieces with the angle grinder
dispose of it a week at a time in rubbish-bin sized pieces in the garbage truck

or stick it on ebay as is for $0.99 no reserve and make it someone else's problem

I doubt a long 1/2" pipe will prevent damage due to a backfire. I've seen airboxes literally blown to pieces from bad backfires (My uncle is a gas specialist, and I've had 4 cars on gas, and seen some decent carnage too).

You'd probably be better off with a larger valve on the plenum, like a pressure cooker release valve type idea. (Or a blowoff valve!! Sweet! )

Although if you're going for a Gas-Research type system (gas carby) or direct injection system, you shouldn't have too much trouble anyway, as the gas is metered more precisely than the European type systems.
You didn't get a European style system did you? They're only really suitable to engines up to about 3.5 Litres as they can't properly meter the gas flow at high volumes. I had one on a 4L Falcon engine once (there when I bought the car), and it was a pain to tune and get the mixtures correct. They're the ones that cause big backfires, as the gas isn't directly metered at the nozzle, it fills the plenum up with gas and BOOM!! It's more prevalent on larger cars due to the inaccuracies in gas delivery.
They're the ones with a 'cap' that goes over the carby and have the gas feed pipe just stuck in the side.

didn't think of cutting it up. I live in a unit with massive bins so disposing of it is not an issue, but i don't want to wake up to an exploding garbage truck, either..

When you fill it with water, that fills the volume that the combustable petrol vapour was previously inhabiting, and pushes it out of the tank into the awaiting open arms of mother nature. Basically gets rid of the explosion risk. I figure if it's safe enough technique for 'professionals' to use for welding fuel tanks, then it's probably ok to use for turfing the tank

Its not that exciting really, about all you can see is the converter, the throttle body is a factory replacement so its hidden under the engine cover on the front

He did mention that there was a "gas computer", i forgot to ask at the time what it actually controlled.. Thats one for next time

    haha

Thought maybe the water wouldn't wash it out properly, thats all. Leaving petrol dregs

Randomly thought of this thread, i did take photos of things before i took them apart so that anything gas related went back on the way it came off. Its not much too look at, just a replacement throttle body and a converter. Everything still together at this point just the engine covers off.

Running a 120L tank at the front of the tray. Made for this car specifically, so fits snugly and doesnt take much tray space.
