its just a lot less work and money than fitting a 1j into a later model and probably easier to get legal but a killer conversion all the same. cheers bigwad
Hey guys,
Just been reading thru the old forums in search of a little more info on the 1g conversion into the earlier model hilux... And everyone goes for the 85 or newer to fit these motors in.
Why?!? Is it cause of a weight, brake or room problem? I cant see any obvious reasons
So the question lays, has anyone got any pics and or/info about fitting 1g in a 3/81 hilux?
Thanks in advance,
Simon

I have an 83 dual cab, with a 1GGTE conversion.
I don't know how hard it is to put these motors into later ones, but in mine, the sump had to be modified to clear the front crossmember, and the firewall has had pretty major surgery to clear the turbos. It might be a different story if you were running a single turbo straight off the bat, but as you will know this is a problem, as it's right where the handbrake comes thru. I have the Supra handbrake setup in mine, on the transmission tunnel. You also need to raise the tailshaft centre bearing up slightly. I'm just about to do this on mine now. This may not be a problem if you keep it stock height, however.
Apart from that, they look quite at home in early Hiluxes.![]()
im in the process of puttin a 1ggte in an 81 single cab 2wd tray top putting a single turbo on for room i have read that the twin turbos get in the way of the firewall will keep posted on how it goes in
