    Default Re-drilling mags...

I've done a search on old toymods, and from what I can gather, you can re-drill stud holes on mags.

I'm looking at buying some mags that are 5x114.3, and I want to drill some 4x114.3 holes... Can a mag shop do this? Is it legal or safe?

Cheers guys. any answers would be helpful.

Generally the answer is no, and I would never do it.

Go the 5 stud hub on the front with CrUZsidas brake setup or buy Simmons like Draven did.

done it to some nissan bluebird mags which are now on my brothers ae82 twincam

    never had any problems

probly not the best solution but it does work, any trusted wheel shop will tell you if its wise to do or not and doesnt cost alot

    Yahoo Japan is your friend.

Note that the R/z32 front brake upgrade requires wheels that are the correct offset but have enough clearance behind the spokes to accomodate the width fo the fat calipers. This rules out a lot of the easilly-avalable dished rims that would otherwise suit an xA6x.

Drilling a 5x114.3 wheel to be 4x114.3 would have two of the new holes meeting the old ones I would expect. The old holes are spaced every 72 degrees around the 114.3mm circle and the new ones are every 90 degrees. You only have 18 degrees to work with there and the holes for mag wheel nuts are not exactly small things.

It usually leaves 3-5mm between holes.

Ring a few wheel repair shops for quotes.
Ring the RTA or an engineer for legalities, AND GET IT IN WRITING IF ITS LEGAL

So with D=114.3 and 18 degrees we can use either the cos rule or the sine rule to work out the space between hole centres.
The result is 17.88mm (2dec places) so your bolts can't be larger than that. I'm curious but too lazy to go and measure a wheel bolt right now to find out the clearance... anyone?

    Ryley,

I may have a pair of MS65 hubs up for grabs, I'll let you know.

CrUZsida's brake upgrade will work for the MA65 hub, but you will need some spacers, as the hub mounting surface line is about 6mm outboard of where the MA61 sits, so check with him first. There is also the option of the Z31T front hubs.

Stefan, You can get wheels that fit even with dish (see my Ray's), but you have to be careful with the caliper clearance.

Reagrdless of whether it is legal, I wouldn't redrill a set of mags. To me it is the same as retreads. Best to avoid !!!

Absolutely - was just saying the upgrade it rules out a lot of wheels that owuld otherwise fit.

You'd be better of starting with a mag which only has 4 studs.
That way, you can have the other re-drilling at 45 degrees to the original ones.

A lot of mags come with this "multistud" type pattern to increase the number of fitments available.

Can I ask why the redrilling anyway? Mags hard to get for a Supra?

Given 12mm holes (as in pic) there is 5.5mm between holes.
If its 13mm holes, there is 4.5mm between holes.
    etc

wow, thanks for this help guys- perhaps something like this would go down well as a little tech article?

wagonist- rims are difficult to find, but, there is a set i am eyeing off which are 5 stud on the front, multi (4 & 5) on the rears...

cruzida- thanks for that pic, it certainly has helped me picture it all...

michael- cruzida said the ms65 hubs are slightly different all round, and wouldn't fit...

so, i'm thinking i may just have to wait for the right set of 4 stud mags and do cruzida's upgrade, in the meantime just get some good pads... i have new rotor on it!

Oh well, just get CrUZsida to add another dimension to his brake package.

To wait for rims that are 4 stud and the right dims are like hens teeth - never seen any.

I think if you want to stick to 4 stud, you'll have to go the Simmons route like Greg.

Doing a spacer is no worries, I can get that made thicker, but doing the ring is a problem.

AFAIK, the MS65 hub centre is 67.1mm and the Nissan is 68mm.
That means the ring will have a 0.45mm thickness. Not really possible to make.
To do it properly you'd need to machine the hole on the disc bigger, and get a thicker ring made up.
I can get it done, its just more expensive.
