    Default NA 1G-GE Ignition Problems

Recently my 1G has devloped a serious ignition prob,
It runs fine, idles fine.... but wont rev past 4 grand, best explained as "scrambleing". it will rev fine untill it hits 4 grand then it jumps and spluters all over the place. Im thinking its either injectors or ignition... Any clue guys?

    Checked the plugs lately ?

Its common for the cam cover gaskets to leak, and when the plugs get covered in oil the spark breaks down at higher rpm.

For $20 I'd start by replacing the plugs, and test all the leads while you are there.

    Cheers Cruzida,
If i was running $20 plugs it wouldn't be so much of a worry. but im runing $38 Iridium tips. It has fowled them up befor but not like this. Will check and inspect.
Could the AFM have anything to do with it?

I doubt the AFM would suddenly develop a problem like this, especially if you can drive around all day at below 4000rpm.

Also pull the dizzy apart and check the cap and rotor, also coil connections.

Problem sounds a lot more like spark than fuel to me.

Cheers, looks like ill be busy this afternoon then.

Will check all the above, and posiably replace the coil. Its a non-coil pack 1G.

Still haveing issues, Guess atm is eletronic ponts or Throttle body sensor.
It will free rev through full range if you ease the throttle on, second you plant it it coughs and drops back to 3500-4000.
    after checking Dizzy cap (replaced)
    rotor button (new on order)
AFM (switched with one at wreakers)
plugs (cleaned fouled up crap off with Dremmal wire brush)
    Coil (replaced)
and leads (checked with Multi meter) Still no joy
Points look a little worse for ware, New on order.

Think im on the money with Throttle body sensor or points (as there is no advanced spark?)

Ill try another pump, however i can smell unburnt fuel when free reving.

By points (sorry im a carbie man) the eletronic sensor in the dizzy itself, its a 87 NA 1G no coil packs, the vac advance seams a little stiff and the sensor looks like its seen better days, its a little rusty.

I presumed you meant the cam angle sensors but just had to check.

Just check the resistance of the 3 sensors (4 pin plug, one wire common to all sensors).
From memory its around 160ohms per sensor (thats what my 7MGTE was).

It would be stranger for them to fail like this, and if they did they would throw a code (I prseume you've checked for codes).

Is the block sufficiently earthed ?
Has it ever run properly or has this only just happened?

Only just happened, car has been going for over 8 months with the only prob of fouled plugs.
Block is earthed fine, nothing has been taken off it.
Cant check ecu error codes……….. Its in a 71 corona mark2, has a JD camira leaded airflow meter, XE falcon bosch ecu that has no diagnostic port, 5m-e injectors, Tvis removed, and i have a sneaking suspicion that the dizzy is a shortened 5m-e one too.

    I see.

Why not spend some money and get a 1GGE electronics setup?

Will most likely run better, have more power, and use less fuel.
