oil catch cans

i have fitted a oil catch can to my car today and changed the oil and now some times there is smoke (not alot of smoke) coming out the filter on the top of the catch can dose any one now what cause it?

Is the catch can connected to the intake? If not there's your answer, if the blow by has nowhere to go the vapour that doesn't get caught by the can will seep through the filter.

You want to make sure your setup goes:

Cam breather -> Catch Can -> Air intake

no it has no connecting to the air intake witch part of the air intake i run a hose from the old breather use to go straight to the catch can that was all the connections it had

My dad knows of an old timer that had an oil catch can on his model T Ford back in 1955 this old guy had never changes the oil and what oil was caught in the can was poured back into the motor.

the oil that come out of mine was fucked looked like it had been in there a while

I wouldnt recommend pouring the oil back in..... no with todays engines anyhow. On a tractor mabe

It depends on the type of can you have, most after market one don't have the extra pipe to run a return back to just behind your airfilter. if it has two pipes on the can then you can run one from the old postion on the top of the motor and then the other back to where the origanal pipe from the top of the motor was connected?

the catch can that I have has three hoses on it and no filter! the bottom hose runs back to the sump through a fuel filter (small drain about 1/4 inch), the middle hose (near the top of the can) runs from the rocket cover, and the top hose (off the Top) runs back to the throttle body PCV (valve).

I don't know how an oil catch can works these days but in the olden days this guy uses a tea billy, it caught the oil that dripped out the engine.

thanks for the info mine is all good a had a mechanic at work check it to day a was pretty sure i installed it wright but when i sew smoke i got worried thanks again for all the help much appreciated

If its how you described and a mechanic checked it and said it was ok then i probably wouldnt put much weight to what he says.

You either need to plumb it back into the intake so air can be removed, or baffle it and add steel wool so the oil stays in and only the air escapes.

The stuff in my oil catch can looks more like snot than oil. Is this normal?

smkoe coming out just means your engine is old and has a lot of blow by. the type of can you describe wont have an intake hose, as you have EITHER a return hose, or an atmosphere vent, not both.

if you want to keep it venting to atmo, you need a better filtration method, or just accept the engine is smoky.

snot looking is normal - its emulsified with the water vapour in the combustion blow by

I hope you change your engine oil often...

The factory PCV system is designed to remove the smoke from the crankcase slowing contamination of the engine oil.

the mechanic that i work with has been a in the trade for 48 years and i 100% trast what he tells me the old owner proudly didn't change the oil much but i plan to change it ever 5000 the motor was only rebuilt 8 months ago so its got no blow by any way thanks for all the help
