    Default Hilux Diff Advice

I know some of this has been covered before throughout toymods.
Basically i need to upgrade my diff as the open centre & 4.5 ratio just doesn't cut it anymore. My truck accellerates, it comes on way to fast to enjoy the boost curve.

I've been looking at various centres and ratios. I'm trying to avoid locking (welding) the diff as i have a pretty piss poor turning circle so 3 point turns turn into 10 point turns at times.
I have figured i might get a Kaaz centre with a 3.9 diff ratio. I figure its a god ratio for highway cruising.
The quotes i have been given are huge ($2500 +) is this normal??
I have Kaaz JZA80 centres ($1000) cheaper than i have been quoted as well. i know the price includes the labour and new bearings, but $1500 in labour ouch.
Can anyone suggest competent diff builders or other options.

    Trav.

3.9 should do your to4 2j nicely, have you looked down the cressida g-series route or is it much the same as the jza80?

i know with a 3mm spacer on the ring gear a cressy diff will work

pure insanity and robbos toyotas have put together great threads on this

I'm pretty sure the diff out of the 4WD hilux's with the 1KZTE turbo diesel (KZN130 or something simmilar) are around the 3.9:1. There are quite a few of these getting around in 4x4 wreckers now. If you get the right one ( mainly the SR5's ), they have an LSD too.

u may wanna talk to someone about 3.7:1 in this case, Ie Linden. as it will depend on where your making the power and the kinda revs you wanna be doing when your cruising, also the gearbox and thats way beyond me and i wouldnt want to give you bad advice

im even looking to put 3.9 gears behind my 1g which im expecting about 220rwkw out of, hopefully it will be making good boost and cruising at ~120km/hr with a gt3076. i have no idea what would be going on with ur 2j and turbo combo but like i said 3.9 would be a good start

Well i have a R154 behind. ATM my TO4z is coming on at about 4200rpm. I intend to race it from time to time at WSID. My tuner suggested a 3.9.
I've looking into the truetrac centres and i think that could be a very good option. Priced alot better than a Kaaz centre.

Thanks for the tip, i plan on getting all new gear in it, so i don't have to go replacing to soon.
I know i would break a stock hilux LSD diff seeing how hard it comes on (making alot of torque) at the moment.

3.9:1 is too short for a 2JZ + manual. You want nice tall gearing otherwise you'll zip through first gear so fast the turbo won't even have time to spool. Been there, done that.

The shortest I'd go is 3.7, but 3.5 would be better.

Yeah all soughted. bought a True Trac centre and went with 3.7 ratio. It is perfect, nice response with my turbo, doesn't clunk when going around corners, locks up well when i accelerate and cruises awesome on the hwy.

what is it like ? does it lock up hard around corners , easy to flick etc. I am considering getting a true trac for my ae86 as the g series kaaz is to expensive. Also would you recommend it for skids.

    cheers bud
