    Got them for a bargain...

They were $150 under very special circumstances.
    For comparison, RE001s were $220.
And 595RS-Rs can be had in my size for $210 from here.

Looks like there is finally another decent performance tyre on the market for those of us running 205/45R16's

    http://www.toyo.com.au/Proxes%20R1R.htm

    Toyo R1R.

The Proxes R1R is an ultra-high performance passenger car tyre that provides uncompromised performance for users that require a tyre with higher grip levels than most ultra-high performance tyres.

The Proxes R1R utilizes a motor sport-inspired silica re-inforced tread compound (UTQG Treadwear rating of 140), and a casing construction that features extra-wide steel belts & steel side plies for exceptional levels of wet & dry grip. The aggressive directional tread pattern prevents aquaplaning even at high speeds. Available size range will expand.

Available late June / July 2008.

    4AGTE SX - '4AGE' - 13.6 @ 103mph - 163fwkw @ 18psi - SOLD
1998 JZX100 Tourer V - SOLD and now lives in radelaide
    1992 GTI - SOLD

nice, that's the same treadwear as the new federal RS-R as well

Federal RS are 180 treadwear, as comparison.

I've got a set of 195/50/15 r1r's on my car at the moment, yet to take them to the track but my god they grip good. I think I almost ripped my eye balls out when I was testing the brakes.

I tried 5 times to lock up the brakes to see how much grip they could provide and I couldn't do it. They just gripped and gripped and gripped. Then the last try I jumped on the brakes a bit more suddenly and they gave way, but they are pretty nuts as far as dry grip is concerned. Even in the wet they out did what my old tyres would do in the dry. I've only got 2 at the moment so I'll be grabbing another set later on and seeing how they fair up

    random related question.

I'm, in the market for new rear tyres, and I've found a pair of 265/35R18 for $600. Can anyone give me an idea if there's a better bang-for-buck option in the mid-high end of tyres, or if that's even a reasonable price? (doesn't have to be a semi-slick).

    Can't beat them.

Don't know how the 595RSs stack up against them or the R1Rs... But you can't go wrong with RT615s.

    kinda what I was thinking...

with a ~1500kg beast, life is probably slightly limited, but I was curious about how the $300 a pop price tag looked. I know it's cheaper for you boys on skinny 16/17" rubber

I just priced them today for the Liberty. 225/45R18 and it was $275ea from Blairs in Cabramatta. So I reckon you're getting a pretty good deal.

    Bringing this back up

Have bought some Federal 595RS in 235/40/17 for my celica.

Very impressed with them at wakefield, very progressive, lot of grip, and good feedback from them.

Also even with the fat arse GT4 didn't flog them out too badly at all.

For the money they are excellent, same price as my old Toyo's....

Quick note on the Bridgestones - The RE001s are not really what you should be looking at in this class of tyre, you want something like the RE-01R

Also i would see if Kumho has a large enough range in Aus yet of the new Ecsta XS

Both these tyres are street-legal "semi" R comps and have a treadwear of 180, so theyre a good compromise if you still want some tyre life for occasional street driving.

i was going to import a set of the Kumhos from the States but have now sourced the Bridgestones locally for $300/tyre

I have the Kumho KU36's on the front of my corolla at the moment, im yet to remember another roadtyre that worked as well as these things do, and the more you push them the more they grip.
i paid $350 for the pair fitted and balanced
