the gear indicator on the dash is from the wires which come from the shifter. It is a 6 pin plug and has the nuetral start and the rest of the gears on there.

I've had this happen as well, right down to the slight clutch engagement in reverse.

When it happened to me, it was full rebuild time.

I'd just buy another one-although make sure it is a turbo box as they ARE stronger than non turbo ones. (more clutches)

Perhaps get a 1J one if you can, you should be able to swap the bellhousing straight over. (check first though-I'm not 100% sure)

Well, box is fuxored, trans shop just called. He quoted me $1500+ to rebuild it I told him to whack the pan back on and I'd see him in half an hour to take it away

So the hunt for a working A340E begins again....

as soon as reverse goes kiddies it all over for your gearbox.

reverse goes firstm then over drive then 3rd, and all you left with is 1st and 2nd gear.

I blew my reverse by putting it into reverse at 80kph, still drove fine for a month afterwards, but blew right after fitting a trans cooler. It would go into reverse fine, but no power actually went to the wheels (box was slipping totally). When reverse blew it took 3rd and 4th with it too as they all depend on each other.
I have an A341LE (slightly stronger) behind my 1JZ. 2nd gear on these is weak too as they only have a 4 plate clutch for that gear. With a stage 1 shift kit they should take up to 265rwkw according to Mike @ MV Automatics.
Check your solenoids (pulling your ECU codes will tell you which ones). But I'd say there is a 90% chance you have a rooted box. At least an A340E is easier to find, made over 50 calls to find an A341LE for my car.

My stage 1 shift kit arrived this morning for the A341LE, might fit it tomorrow
My old blown A341LE is sitting in the garage, if I'm feeling rich I might get it rebuilt and strengthened and go single turbo. But thats waaaay down the road.
