A340E lost reverse :(

Ah, the joys of soarers. Fix one problem, another arises. Got the starter problem fixed, washed the car (at least it still looks good) and took it off to get a blue slip. Pulled up at the mechanics, had a chat with him about the car and what had been done. Went to reverse out of the parking spot to bring it into the workshop, no reverse. Pushed it back, put it in Drive, off she goes, no worries.

I got this box off another club member and apparently it was all working no probs behind another 7m in a MA70. Another thing I noticed whilst driving it today was that it only seem to get to 2nd gear without the overdrive engaged, and only to 3rd with overdrive on. When overdrive is on the the "O/D off" light flashes as well.

Fluid is all good, at the top mark when the box is hot and apart from the aforementioned problems it seems to change, select gears from the shifter etc well (except reverse obviously)

Anyone got any suggestions? After pretty much 3 solid days working on the car with little sleep it's really starting to get to me

I'm not sure what the go is with the Toyota boxes, but I know this is a common problem with old Falcon bogwarmer boxes - they decide one day they just won't go backwards! I think it's an issue of something blowing out in the valve body so all the oil pressure disappears.

My guess is that whatever happens, you'll get to spend some more time lying on the concrete taking the box out....

whatthe? i was told that the overdrive light will flash forever in every z20, to fix this issue you need to do 1 thing..

take out the globe that lights up the o/d light

The flashing wouldnt bother me if it was using more than 3 gears and reverse worked

check the solinoids and if they all seem to click than it is 'change of gear box time....' It really sucks I know. Proud owner of 7M plus A340E

Check your shifter to gearbox linkage hasn't slipped in the slotted hole slightly.

Have a chat to Urantia, he had some problems with his A340E before he put in his 1JZ but he got his working again. From what i know he had problems with 1st gear and reverse.

Reverse doesn't need a solenoid, its within the box, even without the wire hooked up, mine would have P-R-N-D (only top gear though) might not work if one of the solenoids is staying on?

have you tried to pull any codes?

you may not have the speed sensors hooked up correctly

Just dropped it off at the transmission workshop, guess I'll find out shortly what the deal is. I suspect I'm going to need another box, but we'll wait and see I guess. thanks for the replies and info guys, I was up til 2am reading the TSRM so from what I can tell losing reverse isnt a good thing.
My only solace is that it seems to actually select reverse (ie: the engine changes pitch and if the car is moving forward even slightly it stops dead). Hopefully its the valve body, because I have a spare one and it can be removed with box in car AFAIK

Nah, park stops it moving a lot more suddenly and violently and the car doesnt idle down. It actually sounds like there some small amount of clutch engaging in reverse. The gear indicator on the dash also clearly distinguishes between R and P and it's not controlled by the selector in the car, rather by the box through the loom if I'm not mistaken?

does it free-rev or just not move the car?

it free revs but when you select reverse there just the slightest indication of it engaging the gear, I'm hoping it's done the valve body and there's just no pressure getting to it. If it's a clutch then bye bye box
