You can check the right hand side chain guide by removing the front cover on the head and inspecting the guide through there. it sounds like either the guides are worn beyond the limit or the tensioner on the drivers side of the head is out of adjustment.. Just do not over tighten the chain tensioner as it will cause rapid wearing out of the guides. Also any major adjustment of the tensioner will cause the cam timing to be retarded and you may have to reset the cam timing

That or get your hands on a "green book" the 18rg manual.
