its in a ke20, so its a light little car - which helps the fuel consumption. i'll let you know if (when?) it goes bang!

Yep... i built a budget turbo smallport into an old AE71 I had... some pics below for reference.

Basically, I took this $100 smallport 4age i found in a wreckers bin, and converted an AE71. Then i got a backyard turbo kit from MrShin, and installed that.... the specs were:
    - home made "log" (aka bog) manifold
    - RB25 T28 turbo
    - 3" dump pipe
    - 2" press bent exhaust
    - Aristo 2JZ intercooler
    - GZE injectors, ECU, and sensors
    - Emanage piggyback ECU

I ran 10psi through that little engine religiously. There was no lower boost setting
    Made 116rwKW, and ran a 14.114 @ 94.71mph (1.97sec 60')

I would recommend against using the stock GZE electronics, and seriously suggest that you invest in a microtech or other independant aftermarket ECU. It will be more reliable, make more power, and offer more flexibility than the factory ECU, even with a piggyback.

As for what boost you can run... I rekon you could easily squeeze 15psi into the stock smallport 4A-GE with some good tuning and good component selection - turbo size and intercooler.

I would not for a moment fear that the engine would die, unless the tuning was fucked up, or insufficient parts are used.

and if you were really worried, just pop in some GZE pistons to drop comp

you can do that... but it would blow out the tightarse budget.

    To convert from 4AGE AE71 to 4AGTE AE71 cost me a total of $3000.
Adding GZE pistons would add another $1000 in parts/machining and labour.

if the motor doesn't go pop, the gearbox or diff certainly will but i'll be trying my best to keep it all in one piece for a year or two.

hahaha... yeah i blew up a few T series diffs in that car.
Surprisingly, the T50 gearbox lasted a long time, and was still strong when i got rid of the car

But you would of gotten alot more benefits out of it right, short and long term , if you had used a 4agze block?

For example my ae86.. Bought as a 4agze cost me 2200 to turbo it myself , but run stock electrics and AFM.. Made 128.8kw on 9 psi.. I just see the reason of going for the 4agze alot more practical if plan on keeping your car reliable on boost.

i ran my car NA for a year first but already had it running on a haltech. i guess its just a slow progression for me, next will be a W box and commo BW rear end. Then just rebuild another 100kw motor but with GZE pistons, that way i will get the beefy rods and oil squirters, 7 rib block and it will be all freshly rebuilt.
Besides, from what a lot of people have said 10psi is reliable on the NA motor anyway so you only really need the lower comp pistons if you want more boost.
Another thing is the off boost response with the higher compression ratio of the NA motor would be slightly better than the 8:1 CR of the early 4AGZE, not sure by how much it would matter though.

The new twin turbo BMW (335i) runs 10.2:1 CR and 8.5psi.

boost will come on harder and faster ..Thats a plus but you can run more boost on lower comp motor to a certain extent , and i know it debatable

    Jono,

You do realise that the AE92 smallport 4age rods are actaully the same as the AE92 GZE rods?

The AE101 gze rods are actaully smaller, and the same as the silvertop 20V rods.

    Food for thought

yeah thats why i'll keep my rods and just rebuild with GZE pistons.

i'm pretty sure the only differences between the GZE and the NA motor of any generation is just the pistons, which is why the 'gun' GZE to have is the ae92/3 4AGZE.
