they run a belt
could be tappets or maybe a batch of bad fuel causing preignition
they are pretty noisey though
hey all, i got a fucken loud 3L on my hands.
funny thing is, every 3L ive heard sounds exactly the same, they just sound like a truck.
ive changed the oil and its quietened it down a tiny tiny bit, but its still loud as fuck.
the engine was reco'd in 2000, so its fairly fresh, hasnt been hamered or anything (only need to rev it to 3K)
i was just wondering whether they're inherintly loud, they have problems with timing chain (im assuming they run a chain and not a belt, purely by the noise?)
tappets?!
i dunno?!?!

which 3 liter engine u running there mate?
is it a turbo? in a hilux or surf?
+1 for belt.. can't remember ever seeing a diesel toyota with a chain..
Research has shown child in front seat causes accidents, accident in back seat causes child
They run a belt so +2 for that one.
Not sure if they have tappets or use the bucket and shim arrangement.
I have seen a few that have basically destroyed one of the big end bearings, Will still run but sounded like the piston was smacking into the head from the noise they made.
But a 3l shoundn't be overly loud so got to be something wrong with it.
My sig has been pruned as it was over 5 lines long.
i have a 5LE in my ute - is a fairly noise thing compared to the 18R tractor.
check that any of the intake stuff bolted to the engine isn't loose (the flexible mounts fail after a while) as the motor vibrates pretty fiercely.
In their early life, they have a fairly short oil life (5k) - miss that attention to oil changes and the motor becomes fairly noisy.
also, what oil are you using?
yes they are shim over bucket setup too
Yes, timing belt, and shims and buckets.
They are a noisy, rattly little bastard, but where is it coming from, is it harmonic, whats it sound like?
Just general noise, or is coming from somewhere specific. They typically get a lot of harmonic through the drive from the injector pump. Chuck a screw driver against the front of the pump, and the thermostat housing area, and see if its coming from there.
Also, the injectors tend to be fairly noisy with these aswell.
As for the comment regarding crappy fuel, typically if they get a bad batch, they will drop cylinders and run like shit, rather than just being noisy.
3L is a 2.8 Diesel as found in 88 to 97 Hilux's and equivelent HiAces.Originally Posted by Vios-GT_07
As M.J.H. said, thay are known to eat Big Ends...also have heard of them running with broken cranks... never seen it though.
Most of the big end problem is due to poor maintenance. Like most engines, they don't like being run low on oil, and also, as they are a fairly dirty burning little thing, they soot up the oil quite quickly. This is why the oil and filter should be done at 5000.Originally Posted by wa5
There is a lot of these around with upwards of 400k on them, and still going strong on untouched bottom ends.
mine currently has 290k on it, untouched.
OK, I run a turbo'd 3L in the 4Runner, Its a little noisy, and it's overdue for a service.
It's got 230tho on the clock and still going strong. noisy but strong

In my Hiace, the gear linkages rattle quite loudly when in neutral and vibrate through the van!If I push the gear lever over into the reverse gate, the rattle and vibrations disappear.

yep excellent advice, 5k oilchanges are a must... the number of Hiluxs' that I have seen advertised with "new engines" shows that there are a lot of people around who think differently.....Originally Posted by boxh34d
its nothign chronic, and it missed its oil change, so i dont expect it to run quiet as a mouse.
it doesnt sound like anything is wrong with it, just "put-puts".
to tell yout he truth it sounds like it has an exhaust leak? but it doesnt? ahahah
I have a 3L in my ute, its got 370,000k on the clock and has never missed a beat, being a diesel though it is noisy, as long as yours isnt banging or clanking it should be fine
