Have got myself RWD reduction starter from a ST141 (2S) and the teeth are identical to the FWD ST184 (3S) starter.
The 4y one's I've seen are reduction starters. It's pretty easy to tell the difference on toyota starters.
Large motor & small cylindrical solenoid = direct drive (ie: crap)
Small motor & medium size (almost pentagon) angular solenoid = reduction starter
Are you going to grind / chamfer the gear teeth of your flywheel so it meshes correctly?

I ended up with multiple clearance problems with my Y-series starter and the engine mounts. I also had problems with many others. Fortunately after searching through 300+ listings for toyota starters visually, I narrowed it down to one that will work with a 12mm spacer. Not a 10mm as I've seen here, as that's the real difference between the RWD 3s starter & ALL the others I measured.
It's from a 91-92 supra/cressida with 7m-ge/gte, also the same part in a 92-94 sc300 with 2jz-ge.
Fortunately I don't have to worry about steering column clearance, but it wouldn't be hard to rotate it with a machined spacer & some countersunk allens.

mine fits its just tight next to the engine mount.

dunno if this helps but the early 3sge(st162) FWD had the starter on the engine side under the exhuast manifold.
sv21 camry with the 3s motor has the starter on the gearbox side but if you find a 1s sv21 (1.8l) it has the starter on the block side and exhaust side (still fwd).
might be worth trying?
