Interesting. So Rob, you'll be plugging in the shift box, and then shifting using the shifter, yes?

Yes thats right. You pretty much lose the whole 'auto' functionality of the gearbox.

I'll let ya know how I go.

The older boxes use a cable to control line pressure (that's what you have Strad), and the later boxes use a PWM solenoid for line pressure. The cable line pressure boxes have three solenoids, 2 for shift and 1 for converter lock up whereas the later boxes have 1 extra solenoid for line pressure. These gearboxes do not have a 'kick-down' cable as such-the ECU uses speed, rpm and load to determine when to kck-down.

You cannot easily put an MV box on a solenoid line pressure gearbox. (you would have to keep the trans ECU hooked to run the solenoid, and I'm not even sure it would work at all come to think of it)

If you use an MV shift box you can also use a B&M ratchet shifter, but of course it becomes a full manual shift then, and you access OD with a separate button that you put somewhere on the console.

    HTH.

PS What are you doing with it strad? Attempting to better the 11? If so, go manual shiftbox and stock shifter or ratchet shifter. Up till now I've been using a standard cressida shifter and its been fine, but will be changing to a ratchet jobbie just cause I can.

So what does the 4th solenoid do on gb's with the cable?

I should add Cruz that my experience has been with 6cyl A34Xs, and in those boxes there are only 3 solenoids in the valvebody and a cable, or 4 solenoids in the valvebody and no cable.

If there are indeed 4 solenoids AND a cable in the V8 ones then I have no idea what it does. Got any pictures of the 4 solenoid + cable valvebody?

No pictures of mine, but it definitely has a throttle body type sprung actuator that the cable opens, and definitely had a working 4th solenoid inside it.
And the solenoid gets constant +12v and the ecu does the controlling of it.

    Very strange.

Actually, on this topic, exactly how does a pro-ratchet shifter connect to an a340e? They talk about shifter cable, but it seems like it's a levered arrangement for a a340?

You put a bracket on the gearbox to hold the ratchet cable (like a throttle cable/kickdown type arrangement) and put a slightly different lever on the gearbox (changes the length of the lever so the throw of the box matches the movement of the cable)

MV have the brackets and levers on the shelf, but you can make them up yourself pretty easily too.

    Cool
Also, where you getting your shifter from and rough price?

In some boxes that have the extra solonoid AND the cable, one is there to control line pressure, the other shift pressure.

You can buy bogan shifter sticks from most places that sell lots of go-fast bits, e.g. Rocket.
