Look at something this for the front chassis legs, very cheap and easy to do. I just made up cardboard templates and got them cut out from 3mm plate. Have also joined the front and rear chassis rails.

    Nice work.

I was also thinking about running RHS from the factory rails across to the gearbox xmember mounts.
I never did it though as it wouldnt help with chassis twist strength, and i wasnt sure what my gbox xmember will look like yet.
It would be good added protection from Tbone accidents though.

Yeah me to MWP. I like what 30psi 4agte has done to his gearbox x member, but until i get a 1jz and r154 i cant really do that!

I reckon iv probably added around 20kg's to the weight of her. Weight really isnt much of an issue tho. Its going to be that of its head in the end it going to need a bit of weight!

I'll be conducting the chassie front/rear joining over the next few weeks. Can anyone see an advantage to welding the box section directly to the existing rails, or what MWP has done and weld it to the 'area' that the rail finishes at is perfectly acceptable?

    Thanks

Haha yeah well in this project i'm going to weld in my 1/2 cage as currently its only bolt in.
Where the legs go in the corner of the rear foot well areas i'll box that section together with the side rail and the rail that goes across for the seat to bolt to.

But that wont strengthen up anything in front of it. Not ready for a 6 point

I can't see any problems with welding the reinforcements in as MVP as done. It's still going to transfer and loads between the two members, and thats the aim of putting the bracing there.

And as for welding the cage in, if you have plates on the underside where the cage bolts in, its probably better than welding becasue you spread the force over the area of the plate (providing your bolts are torqued properlly ) , whereas welding it in will concentrate the force more at the edge of the weld. Someone correct me if my thinking is wrong, but that my first impression.

Like timbosaurus said, go the full cage but be sure to tie into the front and rear shock towers, and rear spring mounts for a really torsionally stiff chassis

I like this thread too, I'd love a full cage, but like Joel will be going a 4 point weld in and then add some of this extra strength into the rails and in the front...

I've got a six point alloy bolt-in, but don't run the front legs/intrusion bars most of the time. I'm thinking of getting it replicated in steel (for a bit more safety and CAMS compliance) and at the same time i'll consider welding in the rear half.

It all depends on whether I can sell my proper race car.

Same plan here, weld in rear 4point and bolt in intrusion bars...

Has anyone done anything to brace/stiffen up the rear of the ra28's?
Around the tail lights i'd be interested in hearing about.. I find the middle plastic section cracks often and last track day I ended up with enough flex for the tailgate to touch the body..
Ideas on strengthening this area would be much appreciated
