    Default AE92 - tweeter positioning

    Folks

Anyone have an AE92 with splits (and tweeters mounted in the doors?)
I want to improve my front stage (due to the shit location of the 4" in the dash facing DOWN) i want to put tweeters in the doors.
Ideally i want them positioned just under the mirrors (yes mine are electric mirrors) but drilled into the door and flush mounted in the actual trim itself
Anyone know how much room is there and whether they will fit in that location?

Not sure whether this should be in tech and conversions, sorry for a poofy stereo topic in a technical section...

    Cheers

YOu could do it into the metal curvy bit at the top of the door trim... depending on the depth of your tweeter. Its really a pain in the arse, you just need to look at different locations, and if you want to cut holes in the metal of your door.

If you are ok with cutting metal - its easy

FWIW having the tweeters up high actually gives too many reflections in the AE92. There are far too many hard surfaces.

I actually had mine positioned quite low, basically under the dash, and pointing at the opposing seating position:

Not only did this even out the stereopsis but it allowed for a much more natural sound.

6.5" Focals were mounted in the doors on an angle in custom pods:

    cool
    thanks for the ideas
    thinking two things
1 either use a holesaw cutter and cut into the trim and (metal) underneathe - i like the idea of a flush mount tweeter - i have them done that way in my back shelf.
2 do like AndrewG in his st162 and mount them on the power mirror cover.

chris how is the front stage with your focals. focals are great speakers - love em to bits.

    stereopsis?

I have found having them mounted low often results in what is known as a 'rainbow sound stage' . Ie, the sound stage is pulled toward the floor at the extreme left and right, like the shape of a rainbow.

In my AE101, I'll be modding them into the dash, right where the A-pillar meets the corner of the windscreen and dash. That way the windscreen will help act as a planar diffuser and the high mounting will prevent the highly directional treble frequencies from coming from my feet.

i did audio install for ~8 years and i found the same thing. keep the tweet close to the driver and i had good sucess at audio comps with customers cars mounted low directed at the opposite seat/head listening position.
sometimes i miss that job, not!

Yeah, i set up that car for SQ comps, and it scored 4+/5 at the 3 events i entered it in (before the GZE setup went in, and then i didnt care). No rainbow front stage at all, quite level, with some tonal highs in the left due to the SX dash changing there.

    Alpine test cd sounded great.

ive been toying with the idea of putting them where thepower window cover is too, think it will give better direction then putting it up on where the pillar meets the dash
