Default ST185 Gland Nuts With XT130/RT133 Struts

    Hey,

I've destroyed one of my gland nuts with stilsons a while ago when I removed the old inserts, snapped the top off it .The other gland nut has a different thread all together but it did come out (in pic below). They were stuck in there good. There for a HiLux brake upgrade on a KE70.

I'm replacing the old insert with KYB's (365077) ST185 Celica front inserts after having a great chat with a guy at the KYB Melbourne office. I did actually ask the guy about the gland nuts but KYB don't do any shocks for the XT130 so he couldn't tell me anything.

I was wondering if anybody knows if the ST185 gland nut will fit the XT130/RT133 strut?

Or am I buggered and will have to somehow find a pair for the XT130 haha?

I'm not too sure on the thread size, but it roughly measures 47mm. Strut tube's 51mm.

    Thanks guys,

    Ethan

Try RA40 Celicas. How is the thread inside the strut tube?? If this is stuffed, then you are rooted and will need new struts.

Wreckers only want to part with the entire strut. I'd have to check if the threads good on the other one, I cant belive I didn't check both. Might do that now.

A tiny bit loose compared to the other, nothing loctite couldn't fix. But it has caused a tiny bit of damage, but it all still threads together well with the right one in.

Hang on, just remembered something. There are 2 types of nuts. One like the coarse threaded one you have, where you use a stilsons to take it off. The other is like the one you think is stuffed, where you use a pronged wrench (or if your a backyarder, old flat head screwdriver and hammer) to remove. So your nut is not stuffed at all... it just looks different. The notches in the middle are the bits you use to remove it with.

Yeah it looked like the coarse threaded one untill it snapped off haha. Really small welds held it on.

I don't see the weld marks. Could have been something somebody welded on because they were lazy. Either way, looks to me like you can use it as is without trouble... just the other one is still an issue. Pity cause I threw a few of these out. Check through the wrecking threads, see if you can find anyone close to you with a similar vintage RWD toyota they are parting out that is willing to split the struts (probably need to go with own tools and do it yourself, but often people will let you do that shit with struts they can't sell)

there are 2 or 4 small spot welds that hold the top hex plates on.

i have ordered new glad nuts from koni before when doing coilover conversions and such.
the ST205 inserts i normally use come with a 1.5mm pitch but the XT130 struts use a 1mm pitch.

they cost about $40 for the pr from memory but if it gets you out the shit then they're worth every cent

    cheers

edit, o_man have a look at the top pic and you will see 4 small black dots on the gland nut. 1 near his thumb and every 90* from there.

if your in desperate need, go visit your local mechanic and ask to have a look thru his random bolt collection,
ive found heaps of them round the shop since after struggling to find a couple when we needed them.

If there were a clean photo of that nut, then I might be able to distinguish weld marks. I have seen plenty without the hex on them before... so either I have seen plenty with the top broken off... or they are also made like that. Either way they can still be used, and the hex does nothing more than provide a convenient way of tightening the nut onto the strut insert (they do not tighten onto the tube).

I think I found a tool that would actually tighten/un-tighten the type of nut your thinking about today, but that was at work and I've lost the link. Funny that gland nut looks identical to my bung one.

Sent an email to Koni and they were no help. But they could tell me they only fit "Koni" inserts...

If I get desparate I'll go searching through the local mechanics, that sounds like a great idea lol, I'd never have thought of it.

But I'll float around the for sale sections on a couple of forums, someone has to be willing to chuck a couple my way.
