i've been told around 120 is a safe limit? i wouldn't wana push it too far past that.
whats too hot?,
so far ive had the oil temp up to 110dg's giving it a lil blast. and once it see the track in a few weeks time im expecting that to climb more whilst under WOT for a period of time, (would expect it to hit 120+)
ive spoken to oil reps, they tell me the oil is good for 300dg's before it starts to break down,
this bullshit?

120-130 is getting bad no?
wasn't there a few threads on this already?
break down, and lose viscosity are different things... who cares if the oil hasn't broken down if your bearings have galled...

i searched but found 300 thread on temp gauge install![]()
I dont think theres a simple answer to that one, all depends on how much stress your putting your bearings under and which particular oil your using-if youve got 150 weight it would probally just be starting to flow properly at 130dg.Personally i try and keep it at the same temp as coolant-90dg or so, that gives me a fair safety margin. Just my two cents.
GA23(never finished-now with cracked block) JZX83 (Tyre eater) 3sgte AE86. by now i should know better.
your oil gets that hot giving it a little blat, jeez.
do you run an oil cooler? if not and you wanna do some track work i seriously suggest you get one.
if you already do, i suggest getting more air to it. with my 19row oil cooler and -10 lines, i expect no more than 115 MAX on the track, and on a slight spirited drive about 90-100

Pao / Ester Oils are also more resistant to breaking-down at higher temperatures. So at normal operating conditions (10cSt at 100dC) the oiling system has plenty of margin (above the 2.5cSt minimum). Now tow a load, or take the car to the race track, and the oil temperature rises. When a 30W oil reaches about 265dF it also reaches about 3cSt and the margin in the system is removed. Is rapid wear happening, no, but it is not far away from happening. In similar situations a 40W oil will reach that 3cSt at about 280dF and a 50W at 300dF
300 degrees Celsius, lol, get them to sign a document saying that then start pricing your new Engine.![]()
Rep points are for those who feel inadequate in other areas !
lets be sensible
oil chemical breakdown is not the issue.. it's not going to start breaking chains from heat before your engine is fucked.....

using 15-50w oil,
cruising it sits on 90-95,
that lil blast was 4-5000rpm for 15mins feathering the throttle on/off boost,
now is this a mechcanical oil temp guage or electrical guage and is it in the sump to get a proper temp etc or have you put it somewhere else
my race car runs around town on about 60 to 70 and on the track will be about 90 to 110 and this hasnt a oil cooler at the moment just the factory heat exchanger
get a thermostated oil cooler kit for it or just go full flow if you can't afford it yet

Oil temp is NOT about the oil breaking down, it is about keeping bearing temps down.
Anything over 120 deg C and you are looking for trouble. The bearing shell is about to give up.
I read in a magazine (so its probably wrong) that 80 - 100DegC is the best range to keep your oil in. I'm aiming to get my temp down to 90DegC cruising temp. My 1JZ at the moment, has a cruising temp of 110DegC and climbs to about 130DegC when I drive it hard. This is with an oil cooler and the the electrical temp sender is mounted on a sandwich plate where the filter used to be.
