Undo the all the injector nuts half a turn and crank the engine and watch for fuel. This is the first process to see if the fuel pump is working.

Was the car running lately? or have you done something recently and now it won't start?

I have a wiring diagram of the ECU for the 3 litre Surf from when I had my Surf, I think the pump is the same or very similar as the 2LT-E. Are you getting power at the B+ terminal on the diag connector? This is very important as this indicated whether 12+ volts is getting to the ECU and all the pump controls.

ok, we put some petrol into the manifold, and it fires up.

so it is a glowplug issue...
the plugs are new, so we might suspect faulty preheat timer contol module.

we want to know the location of it on a surf 2lte, if anyone knows?

Also these engines will start easily without any operational glow plugs. Just leave the bonnet open on the front lawn facing the sun and try and start during the day. You will have no dramas, but you need to get fuel to the injectors.

just to be clear the injectors are pumping fuel? you said you put fuel in the manifold and it fired up. if it only fired when you poured fuel in then you would think you have an issue with your fuel system.

the car will run fine once we put petrol into the manifold...
it just wont start when its cold, or once it cools down..

you mean you manualy pour diesel into the manifold or the injectors put it there? if you have to manually do it then you would think the injectors and pumping fuel in?

Just trace the large wire from the glow plug rail. The relay should be in the engine bay. On the 1KZ engine the relay is driven from the ECU.

manually put petrol into the manifold.

we can hear the relay click in the engine bay.

now the coil light in the dash will light up for 2 seconds, whereas previously it would stay on for 5 seconds or longer

The relay contacts are prone to failure too. I've had this on another Hilux. There's 60 odd amps going through them.

can relays still fail when you can hear them click?

Most certainly. It's not the coil in the relay(that clicks) that normally fails, it's the contact set the the coil operates. A good way to bypass the relay is to put a positve jumper lead from the the battery + directly to the glow plug rail for a few seconds then try and start. The glow plug rail will normally have a black powder coating on it but on most old busses the coating has begun to peel off. This is where you stick the jumper lead.

Just be careful when you do this as to not short circuit the battery.
