    Jeffro,

Toyota didn't make them very accurately from the factory.
Have a look at the small end holes and see how well centred they are!

After thinking for an extra minute, do you resize the cap only?
That is the only way that the rod would not get shorter, even if only by the smallest amount.
There is an upside of shortening a rod, it moves the piston further away from the valves.

Lol, thats retarded! why do you think you need to get oversize bearings when the journals are machined?

you could use the crank and rods from any 18R they will fit into the G Just need to get a engine machine shop swap the pistons over for you.
When resizing a conrod they machine the same amount off the cap & the rod then bore the big end hole to the original centres, where not talking alot of material here so if the rod has had a fair bearing spin it's a bin job it's mianly to correct out of round.
Go easy on the factory they have balance pads on the rods which are there for balancing purpose, so some rods look different to others because of different weights in the beams. So when building a tough engine thats why you look for a rod with the balancing pads nearly gone that tells you it's got max material in the beam, remembering the rods are balanced for total weight as well as end for end. Toyota has built it's reputation on reliablity so you would be a brave person to question their machining.

    Cheers Dave.

ok i see what you are all getting at, would someone be able to write me a list of what i need to buy and get done?

i have got 3 18r's sitting here what would it take to just swap ova the crank/rods, do i need to get it machined into the block?? or can i just pull one down to a basic block and bolt on the timing cover/dizzy/head and timing gear??

    thank you
Looking for a new toy. If you have something 18r powered let me know.

    Rhetorical question.

Sorry, I don't get where machining journals has come into this discussion, did I miss something?

Incidently, you can get ACL big end bearings for rods that have been resized larger than stock. Just thought that was interesting.

Have you ever compared a bunch of 18R-G rods to see their small end alignment?
I had to combine almost four sets to find four rods that had holes close to the centre of the small end.

Balancing 18R-G rod sets is always a good idea, I've got a collection with a weight range of upto about 40 grams difference throughout various generations (not including the 18R rods that were used in 18RGEU). One matching set from an 18RGU had a 10 gram range just within that set.

It wasn't in relation to your post Steve_M, it was meant for allencr's post.

    No worries, jimmmayyy.

Argo (australian rod manufacturer) have made 18RG rods before, but they'd still be priced as custom.
I'm sure the other rod manufacturers would also make a set for you, for a price.
New pistons can be sourced from lots of places, some cheaper, some more expensive.

There are two japanese websites that do them.
Kameari Engine Works (toyhead auto is US supplier)

    & This mob:
    http://www.escort-jp.com/piston/toyota_c.html

Arias can do custon forgies (they have the dome shape already worked out, just need sizes and compression heights etc.

Brenton at fours'n'more in SA orders 18RG forgies from CP in the US.

Toysport (if you can contact them) usually advertise them.
