good question i have the same problem with idel but mine comes and goes
Hello,
Been searching around on the forums and didn't find much so this is my problem.
On startup my 1g-gte gen 3 runs very rich
Also the idle is always bad, even when the engine is warmed up. It would idle consistently then it would jerk a bit and then idle good.
I do not think the motor is losing compression
Spark plugs are fine
Timing is fine.
I am thinking its something to do with the ECU or some Sensors.
What could be causing this problem?
Thanks.
good question i have the same problem with idel but mine comes and goes
what do you mean idle is bad? how?
have you checked all the vaccum hoses and none are loose or leaking?
also does the afm look like its been tampered with?

IT would idle fine and then it would idle slower then faster for about a split second, and it would not idle smooth, kinda hard to describe. Still idles bad even when the engine is warm, and when its not warm it runs very rich and doesn't idle well.
Yes I checked all the vacuum hoses, I thought that might be a problem but its not.
Nope the AFM doesn't seem to be tampered with.
mine does this when warm aswell...the other night i stopped at the lights and it was idling at 630rpm (safc reading) then it would go up to 830rpm (or so) then it would go back down....it was constantly fluctuating!!! and sumtimes it feels like it misfires, any1 else had this problem??....only happens once in a while, it feels like a misfire, but doesnt happen very often!!

i had this exact problem and it was from listening to fools on the net about the spark gap on my plugs i dont care what anyone says leave the damn gap at 1.1 i was told by a few people that the gap for the 1g with a bit of boost should be .7 gap this is bullshit my car ran like a dogg and did all the above untill i put back some standard plugs with the original gap runs smoother better pull everything was just better allround ... id suggest ngk standard plugs and see how they go the differance in my car was instant no hesitating no missfire/dead spot at idle and it even helps a little on the running ritch side of things ... although mine still runs that ritch its not funny lol hope this helps ... bottom line is ask a shitload of people b4 you do anything as there are alot of great guys on here who know there stuff ,but also alot of idiots ....
looks like a common issue, i have a similiar problem my idle doesnt fluctuate but once warm if your sitting at the lights or stationary it will drop revs really quick the go back to normal and makes the car sorta jerk doesnt happen very often either very random
Also initial take off sometimes i plant my foot and its splutters a little before taking off normally and that is at random.
Ive tried so far checking all ignition wiring, changing air filter, resetting ecu checking all intercooler piping, cleaning out the ICV "idle control valve" (id recommend you do this if noone has already) replaced spark plugs, ran some injector cleaner through (im not sure if that stuff is a gimmick or actually works but was worth a try) so yea give some of that stuff a try, process of elimination. maybe you might find the problem on the way.

yeah i had this problem but was after i did a single turbo conversion. it was that i didn't put the vaccum line back into the hole the one thats connect to the power steering pump. It would try to stall at the lights and idle would drop

Just read some specs on the 1g-gte, shows that spark plugs should be PQ20R-P8, Doesn't the P8 mean it should have a 0.8mm gap? Mine were just PQ20R's, but had a gap of 1.2mm, I changed them to 0.8 and it seemed to run a bit better, but still has a problem, idling bad, I dont think the idle fluctuates but it feels like it misfires at times.
doubt spark plugs are your main problem
sounds like a vacuum line is off, dirty afm, cold start not turning off or something along those lines
i know spark sounds stupid but trust me thats all it was with mine and help is always better from someone who has actually had the problem .....
it could well be the car is running really rich and fouling the plugs
therefore when u replace them, the same thing will happen again and it may seem like you sovled the problem but its really a band aid solution
anyway enough of speculating whats wrong
i would try diagnostic mode and see what codes its spitting out
or find someone which will lend u an afm, icv, cold start..etc and trial and error
ps. how do you know i've never had the problem? i also own a 1ggte
cheers
Wouldn't you only need to check the ECU for error codes if the check engine light comes on?
Where is the Idle Control and Cold Start Valve located?
well the only time i have had codes, was when i blew the intake pipe off the manifold!! other than that, i have chekd for codes and nothing!!! ill check the plugs when i get a chance!!
thanxs guys

Looks like this is a common problem with 1g-gte's, should I replace the idle control valve and cold start valve? or is there a way to fix these?
