What to do for bellhousing to motor bolts??

Hey,

I've got my 2jz-ge not far off being ready to install into my ma61 but I need some bolts to go thru the bellhousing and into the engine block. What's the best way to go?

a) Order OEM if possible?
b) Measure thread diameter, pitch, and length to get some aftermarket (high tensile??)
c) Source from another engine? If so, which?

Anyone with advice is greatly appreciated!

Step 1) Measure OD and length needed
Step 2) Go to to wreckers and acquire
Step 3) Profit?

Depends if a wreckers is closer / easier than a bolt shop...above is prbly what I'd do tho...

From memory there is only two different bolts used in JZ for bellhousing

im a fan of OEM, id say raid em from another toyota at the wreckers

I cant see why ones from the bolt bar would make a difference, i just prefer not to use them as they normally have odd size heads (1mm larger head than normal as a general rule)

Commonly available aftermarket bolts will have significantly larger head sizes, to the point where you will not be able to use any tools on the bellhousing (just not enough room) - eg toyota 10mm thread has a 14mm head, aftermarket generally 17mm. With some bellhousings you would not have enough room for the head itself, let alone tools.
You could, of course, use in-hex head bolts which won't give you any problems with clearances but might make tool access difficult in some cases.

Generally toyota uses 12mm (17mm head) and 10mm (14mm head) for bellhousing to block. The lengths vary but the threads are the same so if you find something close it should be fine.

Viper... i happened to be at Toyospares one afternoon, popped the question of where I can get a heap of Eng->Gbox bolts (didnt feel like removing at a wrecker) and out came an ice cream container full of them for me to take home and use...use OEM as you can be sure of quality.

Three if you include the starter motor bolts.

i'd like oem as the lengths and bolt heads would be as they should be. Luckily i've got the starter motor bolts and the starter motor. Does anyone know if the starter motor used with the R154 flywheel will work with the w58 flywheel? It looks about right when I dummy fit it, but I won't be sure until it's all together.

Starter motor is the same regardless of R154, W58 or auto

It will work

Yep same starter motor. Will work. Just go to wrecker and raid from another Toyota.

YAY, a thread about bolts!!!!
no sarcasm here buddy, i work in nuts and bolts and am a toyota nut.

the head sizes referred to in this thread aren't necessarily "aftermarket" and "OEM" so to speak, but what is being referred to are the standards that the bolts are made to.
the Japanese use a standard called JIS, (Japanese Industrial Standards) and the "aftermarket" or commercially available bolts are made to DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) standards. this basically means that the aftermarket bolts conform to DIN (german) standards.

at some specialty bolt shops you could ask them to order in JIS standard bolts that have the "correct" head sizes for your JIS car.

personally though i like the OEM bolts that have factory markings too, all for originality's sake

oh yeah BTW.....
some locally assembled cars may have DIN standard fasteners mixed with JIS standard depending on what was locally available at the time.
