Default Choke not working right on my daily?

    Hey all,

My daily is running like ass on cold starts now, its a 92 honda civic. It seems to be dumping way too much fuel, visible fuel smoke and low blat blat blat blat idle, won't rev freely etc. Doesn't stall though. As soon as its warm / choke not kicked in, its fine.

not knowing anything about carbies, is there something obvious that i should look for to clean / screw thats fallen out or something like that?

    Cheers

try using less choke... that is if it's an adjustable thing inside the cabin. Although, I had a look at one to buy once, and from memory it's just an on/off thing?

these are the twin carb version aye? pull the filter off and give both carbs a really good spray out with carby cleaner while the eng is runnin,

rebuilding them is a very expensive job! sent a few hondas away for this very prob.

I'll have to try this over the weekend and see how i go.. Yeah think its twin carb. Never looked that closely to be honest

Don't have any control over the choke, its automatic. Still need to do the CV blake, reply to my pm!

ed: Forgot to add, it wouldn't start today. Not sure if thats because last time i ran it i moved it 20m so it was running stupidly rich as usual then i turned it off, or what the cause was.. Got it started tonight with the nrma bloke with alot of cranking hooked up to jumper leads.. Took it for a run to blow out the cobwebs, see how it is in the morning..

With my old 22R it started better if you pushed the accelerator flat to the floor before starting it to reset the auto choke. The auto choke used to regularly gum up with carbon so if you can find it and give it a good spray with carby cleaner and have a go at adjusting it. The one on the 22R was a black dome on the back of the carby. I don't know how much this will apply to Hondas as I've never seen one but it's food for thought.

Thanks mate, i'll have to see if i cant find it.

It occurred to me, that i am missing the pipe that runs from the exhaust heatshield to the inlet, how much of a difference does this make, and to what?

I assumed that, that on my old 22R was just for cooling the manifold, but when I think about it, the intake would have been sucking hot air from under the heat shield. So, removing this would cool the intake and increase power?

That pipe is called the pre-heat tube. Its designed to pick up warm air, for better emissions when cold, better fuel atomisation etc.. (Some engines have a valve to go back to cooler air when engine is warm). Not having it won't cause the issues you are having though.

I agree with everyone else, check the linkages on both the choke and throttle. (I say throttle as well, because on some cars when the choke is opened there is a linkage to open the throttle slightly, not enough throttle may cause the richness due to less air getting through). You can probably test this by pushing the throttle down a bit and seeing if it runs better?

If you rev it, its still running like arse, still unsteady and dodgy but at higher revs

I've put the car up for sale, i will have a look on the weekend if i get a chance at this again, to see if i can improve things a bit, thanks for the help gents.

Running like shit at higher revs.... When was the last time it had a service or even a tune? I'd give it a full service first, fuel filter, plugs, oil, oil filter, clean the air filter. Then a tune - idle, timing, idle mixture, timing. If your going to sell it, just use the cheapest stuff you can find for the service and give it a real quick tune (20mins) to make sure it's at the manufaturer spec's.

Running like shit at high revs when its cold i should say (less shit, but spluttery). Fine when warm. Usual service was not long ago, (plugs, oil / air filter etc), but who knows the last time it was tuned. Years ago probably

Turns out i didnt have to worry, i got hammered with calls, it sold to the first person who looked at it, withut even opening the door let alone taking it for a drive, for full asking price when i would have taken 500 less.. cash on the spot. Go figure?

Cheers for all the help gents, +rep
