Na, the rocker cover gasket is that corky stuff, if yours doesn't look like it needs replacing and it's still intact then re-use it and re-seal it with gasket goo. Also for good practice, pre lubricate all components.

Do your first adjustments then re-assemble the cover and start the motor. If it still sounds a bit tappy, re-check till you get it pretty quiet. "Pre lubricating" aids in minimizing the tapping noise too.

    good luck

Alright I got this done last night, it was actually really easy. But one of my mums friends came over thinking he's mr mechanic know it all, and proceeded to check my timing and tune my carbs, he reckons the carb doesnt need to be jetted, had a fiddle round, revved the shit out of it to my dismay, and when I took it for a drive today to test it out, it has lost 90% of the small amount of power it had. It only barely just made it up my driveway. I'll have to retune the carb as best I can, but fuck I'm pissed now, I didn't even ask him to touch it! GRR

I also noticed last night that I'm getting a small amount of steam/smoke coming out of the oil catch can. And it seems that my water pump is leaking, I noticed a bit of dripping and the ever so obvious green coolant seeping from around the edges.

    "carbs"?? More then one?

There isn't much on a carb. to 'tune' that will result in a 90% power loss! \The idle mixture - won't affect power, the idle speed - won't affect power, the accelerator pump - will affect throttle response, and the choke, which could greatly affect it, or maybe the linkage for the secondary throat.

Amazing isnt it, who would have though more than one carb is possible.

Again im in awe of your brilliance.

I guess since they control the fueling of the engine they arent really responsible for a whole lot are they. Going by your argument my car should run almost as well without the ECU.

Mispelling - I meant just carb, the s was a typo.

I did my best retuning the carb with a guide I found on the net, it runs a little better, and I changed the timing back to where it was before I retarded it when I was trying to get rid of the ping. He played around with this knob underneath a little clear plastic screw on cover on the dizzy. I'm led to believe this might have something to do with the vac advance? Could this have much to do with the way the car is running and how do I set it?

    Cheers, Matt

its just a fine tunning knob for the ignition timing. Did you remove and block the vac advance hose on the dizzy before you set the timing? Also what is your dwell angle? It should be around the 52 mark(-/+2). This can also affect the performance of your motor. If you have the elec dizzy make sure the gap is the correct size.

As mention earlier, does your secondaries open up on the carby?

Nope I didnt remove the vac advance hose, will redo the timing with it off. After I redo the timing do I need to do anything with setting the vac advance or is that just worked out off the top of the normal timing by itself? Dwell angle - I just googled to find out what that is but I dont have a "dwell meter" which is apparently what I need to measure it. As for the secondaries, I remember they did but I haven't checked so I will do that today.

I also tried testing for vacuum leaks by spraying carby cleaner on the carb, and I found there was a place that would suck it in and change the way the engine ran, its a small threaded hole, just behind the carb linkages, on the base. Any ideas what this is and if/how I should plug it?

It's basically where the arrow is, but right on the actual base.

Hmm possibly, But in the diagram, the direction of the screw is horizontal, giving me the impression that the screw should be going in horizontally, but the hole is vertical. Im not sure if the way the screw is in the diagram represents its direction or just its placement.

The screw goes with the Spring 53, if you follow the line from the spring it goes into the base of the carb, I can't remember what this does but i will try and find out for you.
