Did you have the heater set to full HOT when you bled it?
If not you may still have air in the heater line.
Hi all just have a little problem with the mr2 it overheated when the old owner had it and i changed the head gaskit thermostat before christmas and also the temp sensor. oh i also replaced the water pump as the inner seal was gone. The problem i have now is that the temp gauge shoots right up to hot as soon as i start the car and then after a little while it shoots back to normal. but now it stays on hot, i know your going to say i didnt bleed the system but i have. i used car ramps bled it from the radiator, heater and then thermostat. i was just wondering if it could be the thermostat gone again? And if its not that does anyone know what would fix it?

yep had it on full hot and have bled it twice to make sure.
does this happen as soon as the ing is on? or after the actual engine is started? The problem i have now is that the temp gauge shoots right up to hot as soon as i start the car
if it happens as soon as the ign is on, make sure the temp sender wire isnt earthed out on anything (rubbed though or pinched against some metal). by memory (or drunk'n'ness) the sender for the temp guage is the one that comes from the outlet coming from the head (the radiator pipe to the rad cap) if it the wire is earthed it'll shoot the guage straight up to full flat out hot. could even be the sensor itself.
i remember a while back you were having dramas after a HG change.
the engine should not get hot straight away, even if there were no water at all in the system.
They are a pita to bleed. Have you found and used the engine, heater, and radiator air drain valves?
See KARNAGE's first post. .Originally Posted by Officer Doofy
I honestly dont beleive it's a big hassle to bleed them, follow the instructions. . . just start from the front and work backwards. . .Originally Posted by KARNAGE
Back on topic, I agree with feral. If the guage is shooting straight up on startup as you say, its issues with the temp sensor/wire not the engine itself. I would be starting the search there. cheers
