SOME of the symptoms are similar to a problem my car had a little while ago.

cam gear had jumped a tooth. worth a check.

o2 sensor was shagged... probably because it was at the end of its life and the engine decided to throw fuel down..

checked cam-gears, everything's square... visually the ecu isn't leaking anything so we didn't take it apart... nothing is rattling inside and looks to be in good condition

did another diagnostic test a week after the o2 sensor was replaced... no codes... could it be the end of my problems? (no, since the brake booster failed yesterday.. argh!)

i still fail to see how a worn o2 sensor can give so much hassle... and there's nothing that would cause the ecu to have so many error codes. anyway, a working ecu is on standby should it happen again,,

maybe bad pins in the ecu plugs. you could have inadvertently fixed it when you re-installed the ecu.

the oxygen sensor is linked to other sensors in the loom

you will not be able to tell if the capacitors are leaking just by looking at the outside of the ecu

    funny you should say that..

while the car was off the road i arranged for the ecu to be opened and inspected.. all the capacitors look fine... strangely it looks like it's been repaired at some stage, as there's some solder marks on some of the bits ... still, nothing is touching anything and there's no signs of a short or anything... hm... a bit skeptical as i could be getting wrong info..
