I'd lean toward AFM too, the one in my brothers Forester GT died, no amount of cleaning could save it.

A guy from work had to have his replaced in his MY99 a couple of weeks ago, cleaning it didn't help either.

Same thing with another mate with an early WRX (MY00).

They all exhibited the same symptoms you describe.

Cleaning it works sometimes but not all the time unfortunately.

None of the above threw an error code either.

Having a Subaru myself that has had a few issues I often wonder what it takes to throw a code on them sometimes as the response we always get form Subaru servicing is yeah there is a problem but it's not showing a code - ghey.

Mine is in for its 25k km service today, the ABS light keeps coming on, I wonder if they will just remove the globe

She doesn't drive it hard much. The miss was barely noticable on cruise, and I hadn't noticed until the other week that power had disappeared.

About 2 weeks ago for the MY00 it was about $230 I believe. He was whingeing about the price of that and a couple of gaskets so I think that is about what it was.

I always thought they were up over the $350 mark though, but like Toyota parts pricing perhaps it differs over time and from delaer to dealer.

They cost enough that it would be nice to try one to see if it IS the problem before buying one.

I'm tempted to try a set of leads from a mates Forester GT, then if they fix the problem new leads it is. While I'm at it, I might see if the part numbers for the Forester GT and WRX AFM's are the same so I might be able to test that too.

I agree about the MAF diagnosis, fairly common with the WRX's.

From memory there's two different part numbers you can order for the MAF, one is just the sensor, the other is the entire housing with the sensor in it, the price difference between the two is massive.

The MAF on my forester was changed to the newer style denso setup (same physical dimensions as the MAF's used on beams 3sge, 2zzge, 1zzfe etc), this one's apparently more resistant to failing, it still doesn't like being used with an oiled air filter though.

Wouldn't hurt to check fuel pressure either.

Hmm, good thing I checked for myself, we have code 32, oxygen sensor coming up. It may just be a coincidence, but it's a good place to look.
