    Default DIY cheap work bench

Thought i would show how i made my work bench this weekend.

i wanted a high and narrow work bench to fit on the side of my garage..

so went to bunnings to get some tube steal but they don't have this steal (they've got every thing els )
so rang my dad who works for a steal place near Tamworth.
    and asked for..
some square tube steal about 4mm thick
    4X 25cm long
    4X 100cm long
    4X 170cm long
    came to $38

then borrowed my farther-in-laws ark welder.
got new pk of 50 welding rods $15.90.
then started welding bits together but 1st hit the part i was going to weld with a wire brush.

now im a baker not a welder i just picked up a ark welder one day and started useing it, its not that hard..

then when you get used to it..

and then all the frame knocked up..
Time is priceless yet it costs us nothing.
You can do anything you want with it but you can't own it.
You can spend it but you can't keep it.
And once you've lost it, there is no getting it back, it's just gone."

then got some cheap pine wood it was 180x31 so it was a little Short as the steal added 4cm but it was ok
    cost $19.95 for 2 bits..

cut some bits off the bottom shelf to make it fit..

and added some screws to hold the pine there.

so it ended up costing me 73.85 but it was custum made and fits where i wanted it to.
next week i will be puting in some down lights over the bench.
    thanks Craig

Nice work man. Just an idea, you should probably paint the steel or at least the welds to stop it rusting and it'll make it look nice for along time.

Just grind back the welds and get some of that rust kill primer in a can for about $8. Used to work in a big workshop and we made all our benches the same way.

funny you did this craig me and daniel did the same thing about 2 or 3 weeks ago.

we bought something like 9 x 6.5m lengths of the same stuff you have there. we made two workbenches 2.7m long and 1m deep aswell as a shelving unit for my garage thats 2m high by 2m wide and 60cm deep.
i made the workbench to fit some cupboards underneath which i have and to fit a benchtop which i got for free which is an awesome black laminate top with splashback. will get some pics later.

Neat, always rewarding to do work yourself. I am looking to make my own benches and shelving in a few months and I have a few ideas on how to get the maximum use of the space I have.

Good writeup, i too would use kill rust to paint over your creation. One day i might get around to 'upgrading' my desk (a well placed door on some old tyres ):
