Default New AE82 Gearbox + Clutch, Help !

Hey guy's, I'm trying to find out what I can about getting a new gearbox and clutch fitted to my ae82 as I'm deciding to keep it and thought it's probably about due for a new one.

Fairly recently I've been noticing it crunch a lot easier when under high stress and quick gear shifting from 2nd to 3rd and even 1st to 2nd some times, 4th and 5th seem to be fine though. The gears recently also seem to pop out of place a lot easier then they used too when changing up gears they also don't feel as stiff like they used too when I first got the car except going from 3rd - 4th and 4th - 5th.

I've also noticed the clutch beginning to lose a lot of its grip when taking off in 1st, some times you really have to slowly let the clutch out and ride it a little to get out of first without stalling it seems to be getting worse then when I first had the car about 7 months ago.

I'll probably goto a shop and get it all checked out before I waste the dough on buying a new gearbox and a clutch, because maybe it's something else I wouldn't have a clue as i know nothing about gearboxes and clutches for ae82's.

Just curious on what sort of prices I should be looking at for a new gearbox and a clutch either stock or after market and roughly how much they'd individually cost to be installed, also what boxes I could run in the car...

    Much appreciated cheers guys.

sounds like your clutch is worn...

and your gearbox .. either has synchro issues or needs new bushes? either way, a C50 box should cost you around 200 bucks at most, and a new exedy standard clutch kit should be 185 bucks.. (that's the price i got quoted not including shipping from victoria)..

labour in perth seems to cost more, but i had my gearbox and clutch job done, with some change, out of 250 bucks..

The gears that are crunching are because they are the ones that are used the most so they will have the most wear on them. The crunch is actually the synchroniser rings being worn and not equalling the shaft speeds well enough for a smooth mesh of the gears.

The popping out of gear will be from worn selector forks most probably

Clutch will be $180 or thereabouts like Visos said

The $250 that Visos quoted is probably alot less than you would find cause its a pretty big job. Im quite open to being wrong though so you might be able to find a cheap place. I would agree with near on $500 incl fluids, and other parts they might need.

I bought a reconditioned gearbox a few years back for about $750. A rebuild on my gearbox was going to be around $1050 and i think that was just for bearings and syncros so if anything else needed replacing then it would be more.

    Much appreciated cheers guys.

    Hope that helps

ps Try repco or a gearbox, clutch specialist for this stuff incl clutch and the gearbox rebuild.

    ^^

*cough* second hand gearbox *cough* from a toyota wrecker, but make sure it comes with the 3 month warranty thing so you don't get a box with worn synchros or rooted selector fork that's no better than what you've got now ..
