just did some more research, and it turns out there is a speed sender to the ecu in the stock dash, pin 7.
has anyone had any experiance with this?
just wondering what my options are with running an apexi rev speed meter with the t50 box? where can i get a mechanical to electrical speedo converter from to suit?
thanks

thats where the signal goes, not where it comes from.
i asked a similar question a while ago, there is some information on the signal type there.

but how can the signal go there when there is a mechanical cable. also the computer i have has a speed input signal wire.
did the ae92's have an electrical speedo?

no, but the speedo in the cluster has an output that generates the signal that goes to the computer. australian sprinters don't have this, japanese ones do
so basically i have the option of either getting a whiteline JDM cluster, or getting something custom made.
the reason for all this is i want a custom dash, mainly a 4"/5" tacho, and an RSM for speed. (will have other stuff but this is all im having problems with)

If you aren't planning on using the standard speedo then just get an electronic sender that fits the T50. I don't know of one off the top of my head, I've never had the displeasure of owning a T50. We did find when doing the 2J to MS53 swap that we were able to swap a W50 mechanical sender into the A340 with no problems so it might be that you'll be able to track down a digital sender from another Toyota box.
On the other hand any replacement speedo has to be professionally calibrated and certified to be able to be engineered, and yes it is required to engineer it. I really doubt a RSM is going to get certified since it is easily changed by the user.
i see where your coming from. i think i might just get a jdm cluster for now, which is about the same price as a good tacho anyways![]()

i was going to confirm that the australian ones didnt have a speed signal, but i gladly proved myself wrong.
i put one multimeter probe on the speed signal screw (pin 7) and the other on the ground screw, turned the speedo spline with a match stick and i got 4 continuity beeps for every rotation of the match stick.
so there you go, you can hook up your RSM, and i can hook up 7700 RPM redline (when i get a working speedo cable)
might look at destroying two of the magnets so i only have 2 pulses per rotation, then i wont have a speed cut either.
I was under the impression that the "SPD" ecu input wire could be tapped off for speedo meaasurement?
Kind Regards,
Kurt.

sweet man, thank you.
custom dash here we come!
my ecu has no limiter or cut for rev's and speed (go the buddy club brack box!!) brack is not a typo either...

brack might not be your typo, but its a typo all right![]()
thanks for asking the question, if it wasnt for that, i (and other people) probably would never have known about the speed signal.
keep in mind that you will need to put part of the speedo mechanism somewhere, you could quite easily do a full custom dash and leave the pulse generator plugged into the speedo cable socket behind it.
this gives me an idea actually, custom clearly set out dash, big central mount tacho and relocated stock gauges (just fuel i guess, others could all be aftermarket) still have to put the idiot lights somewhere.
already worked it all out..
big tacho just off center, shift light in the middle, indicator pilot lights either side of the shiftlight, RSM to the right, fuel/oil temp to the left with the idiot lights and i already have water temp and boost where the lights and wipers went (switches for those are elswhere)
if you look deeper into the rsm, it has a switchable 12v output, which can be set to go of on rev/speed etc etc.
im going to keep the back of the cluster, but get rid of all the front 'visible' parts.
