Hey guys I recently bought an MX83 with a pretty bad BHG.. I have searched but cannot find anything regarding a How To fix a BHG on a 7MGE and need some guidance please.Oh we dont need a new timing belt either as it was done 10k ago.
Yes I searched aswell..
Ok we currently have everything off intake and exhaust manifolds recker covers etc.
Basically just need to know what sequence to pull everything off from here and what to mark up.
I have been told to liquid paper the cam gears and timing belt with a dash so they can be lined up again.
Now do I take the cams off completly or simply loosten them where the lobes are hitting the valves? I have been told to mark all the caps aswell..I take it its pretty standard sequence for the head bolts etc...
thanks in advance

If you've got that far, the rest is pretty straightforward.
You should be able to get the headbolts out without removing the cams. If they are at TDC, then all the bolts should fit between them and the head casting. Do the bolts on your one require an 'allen key' hex bit?
the liquid paper just makes it easier to reset the timing after it's all finished. if you're careful with the belt it shouldn't slip along any of the bottom pulleys/gears anyway. On the timing plate thing behind the camgears on the head, there are two notches, and the cams do have little lines on their outer ridge. Sometimes they are tricky to spot, but they are there.
I just re-read what you wrote about the cams, and it's fine to leave them as-is. It just means that 4 of the valves will be open when the head is off, so don't put it straight onto the ground. Get a couple of blocks of wood at either end, or stick it upsidedown on a milk crate or something.
If you're getting the head machined, then the machine place should be competent enough to handle the camsI get mine done at Brookers Brake Service in West Ryde, and they've always been good - they have a cylinder head reco joint as part of the business, so they have had no issues taking cams out and putting them back in.
All the specifics on bolt torque and sequence can be found in the cylinder head section of the TSRM
Edit: Beaten to the link! Also, is that a burgundy GLX that was for $500 with bhg and stupidly low k's for one day only? If so, you are a bastard beucase I was 2nd in line to buy that car![]()
Ok so im not going to bend any valves by taking the head off with the cams still intact?
Yep looks like the head studs are allen key. Should I just get the head place to do the valve stem seals aswell?
And yeah I bough the burgandy cressie FSTook 3 stops to get it back from Rockdale to Botany and it was like spy vs spy smoke screen all the way...Top car tho!!
Im getting a full VRS kit from toyota so what else should I change gasket wise?
cheers

VRS kit should come with valve stem seals, so you could do it yourself with the right tools
for the cam covers, new gasket and replaced the phillips head bolts with some allen key bolts
new o-ring for the dizzy
toyota VRS kit is $500 something
get one from repco, $200, and a genuine HG from toyota $70
Bugger! already organised a genuine one from Toyota, stuoid bastards wanted to charge me $700 got one through a mate for $360,just need a dissy cap and button and she should be good after that..Originally Posted by IN 05 NT

hahah sounds good!
I was gonna fix the bhg, hoon around in it for a bit, (maybe use it as a daily and then play silly buggers with the 7MGTE and other mechanical goodies I've got in mine, and eventually swap the good drivetrain into the shell that doesn't already have more than 500,000k's!
the last VRS kit I got was around the $360 mark, that was a while ago though, and the memory is a bit murky. Make sure you do the camcover seals nicely, and regularly check them. The dissy seal can also leak, but I'm not sure how to avoid/fix that
If you want a hand with it, shoot me a pm and i'll see if i can help![]()
