Yer, use ring spanners for the top, if you don't have enough leaverage, use another ring spanner locked into the other to get more leaverage.

But yer it does sound like the trust bearing. I've had this before many times before.

when linden and I did the box in my car, we had a jack under the front of the engine, and a lot of socket extensions bolted together. one person making sure the bloody thing didn't slip off the head of the bolt, the other getting 1/4 turn at a time out of the ratchet.

So I got all the bolts out without issue, but have been having trouble separating the gearbox from the motor.

All manner of wiggling and swearing at it have thus far only resulted in it opening up a gap of 5mm or so. How far do I have to pull it backwards before it separates?

Any hints'n'tips at getting this done?

Its gonna be sitting for a few days while I enjoy the long weekend, so I've just left it supported by jacks.

you have to lever it apart with 2 big screwdrivers ,1 either side of the bell housing
try and support the rear of the the gear box with a small trolley jack
coz, if you try and seperate it while there is pressure from the box hanging there, it makes it about 5 times harder to seperate

Also have a double check that everything is clear of the gearboxes path and nothing is still bolted.

Screwdrivers should solve your dilemma though.

if you try stepping on the clutch and the noise goes away.. you could try checking the gear oil level too.

Stop!

Have you undone the pressure plate from the flywheel? Pull type clutches are different to remove from push type! You need to remove the bolts that hold the pressure plate to the clutch!

I'm planning on getting a big pair of screwdrivers onto it this evening.

As stated, it is supported nicely by jacks, this seemed a good idea as surely the gearbox input shaft is not designed to have the rest of the box hanging from it.

Wilbo I have a w58 trans, the r154 is the pull type mentioned on that tsrm page, so should not apply to me?

So I got the box out last night.... w000.
Looking at the thrust bearing it doesn't seem as shagged as I thought it would be...

I figured with all that noise the thing would be wobbly as hell, but its just got a slight roughness to it. Is that what I should have expected?

I will replace it, but should I be looking at other things while the box is out?

take ya clutch off and replace the spiggot bearing in the back of the crank while your at it and also the rear main seal if it needs a new one. mine spiggot was stuffed when i pulled it out.

just replace the clutch man, get a new clutch kit, it aint that expensive in the long run, and its a good idea to replace it while its all apart anyway, as you know, its a bastard of a job to pull apart again.

and i hope, for your sake, when you got the box off the motor, you supported the front of the bellhousing, nothing worse that dropping it and putting all the boxes weight on the input shaft, still inside the clutch disk, not cool!

Yeah, I'm thinking I should just pull the clutch off...
Can anyone suggest a good place to get a clutch kit from? pref ozzy park area as its close to work..
Would I just take the current one in and say make me a new one?

I dont think I had the weight of the box on the input shaft.
Whats the risk? Bent shaft or fucked bearing?
I gave the shaft a spin after it was out, and it looked straight still.
